**boringish chapter. =p but it gives you a general idea of the setting and introduces some characters. =D
I looked at a clock - 11:15 p.m. Everyone was still working as if it were noon. I never really understood what people were doing here. Scientists walked around in girly yellow lab coats carrying super-grown plants and such. Sometimes I recognized celebrities equivalent to the fame of Paul's and Ringo's walking around. I wondered what they too were doing.
Leaving the lab, I went into what looked like a computer lab. Several people were sitting at their own large and flat crystal clean machine magically called a computer here. This technology must not have been released anywhere else. Each worker had their own headset and talking into it. I caught locations being said and names of people doing things that hurt nature. I was impressed at how fast someone prevented a forest in Spain from being torn down. I lost interest and started walking towards the exit into another room I bumped into someone and fell back.
"Who are you?" the man asked. He looked to be in his forties, and was honestly still good-looking. He must be a celebrity; I probably saw him on television back when I was allowed to watch it. This man had a headset and was talking urgently into it. I was too busy trying to recognize what he was saying.
"Ma'am, who are you?" He asked, probably again.
"Oh. Uh, I'm Lucy. Lucy Diamond." John came out of his silence and giggled at my name. I tried not to roll my eyes.
"Ah, the new recruit from the ex-Beatles." the man stroked his chin. He had black, gentle eyes, black wispy hair, and an angel-like face.
"I'm Johnny. Johnny Depp." he imitated me, then held out his hand. I shook it.
"Shouldn't you be in bed? I heard some wacky stuff happened in the lab. Paul and Ringo should really lay off the.." He stopped mid-sentence and shook his head. I stared at Johnny. He was an actor. I remembered the good part of my childhood where I would watch his movies. My favorite was Edward Scissorhands. I was once again starstruck.
"I-I couldn't fall asleep. A lot of things have been on my mind." I smirked. John laughed.
"Well, okay. Just be careful around here," he said walking away, talking into his headset again. I tried to move on, but then the intercom came on.
"Will Lucy Diamond please come to my office? Thank you."
Everyone in the computer lab stopped talking and turned towards me.
"Um.." I mumbled. "Who's office?" A lady with bright red hair stood up.
"That was President Jani. She wants you." Oh. President of this place. This didn't sound good.
"Uh, where's her office?" I sheepishly asked.
"I'll take you." She removed her headset. "This way." She briskly walked away. I quickly followed, trying to avoid everyone's gaze. The red haired lady turned around as we were walking down a long all-white hallway.
"I'm Scarlett, by the way." Scarlett didn't give a last name.
"I'm Lucy," I answered.
"Yeah. Everyone knows." Scarlett grinned at me. I didn't know why I was regarded as special. But then again, John Lennon was inside me.
"You okay John?" I thought.
"Yeah. It's just that this lady has some interesting thoughts." Before I could answer, Scarlett stopped before two plain wooden doors. She knocked three times.
"Call her Miss Roj." I nodded. She pushed open a door, and I went in. Music blasted in my ears. I heard heavy guitars and a mellow rock voice.
~When I get to the bottom
I go back to the top
Of the slide
Where I stop and I turn and I go for a ride
'Till I get to the bottom
and I see you again, yeah~
When I took a couple more steps into the living room the music died. I was in a palace. Peach walls, cream white furniture, several delicious-looking pastries and tea on a table spanned the room. The music didn't fit the setting.
A woman came out of the hallway. She was beautiful. Brown almond eyes, long caramel hair that rippled around her shoulders and back. Her skin was beautifully pale. She looked like a doll, and when she talked, I got shivers.
"Lucy, John, take a seat." Her voice was deeper then I imagined, but it was still unforgettable.
"Why were you playing that blasted music?" I spat. Well that wasn't me, that was John. I assumed that music was a Beatles song then. John's accent shone through my voice, which made 'Miss Roj' laugh.
"Haven't listened to the White Album in a while John, it refreshes me." She replied.
"It was studio garbage," John replied through me.
"No it's not," Miss Roj chuckled "I find it revolutionary. And this not about you and your band John, this is about Lucy." She handed me tea.
I sipped it as carefully as I could. It tasted bitter and hot. I never liked tea. I forced myself to finish it.
"Quite American you are," John joked in my head.
"Thank you, uh, Miss Roj for the tea." I smiled politely.
"You're very welcome, Lucy, and feel free to just call me Jani." I nodded, wondering why she brought me here in the first place.
As if reading my thoughts, she said,
"I learned you're a new recruit for the Peace Project. Please tell me about yourself."
I paused, unsure. But with her hospitality, I felt comfortable telling Jani my story. She listened attentively and gave me looks of sympathy at the most perfect times. I felt like crying.
"It's alright darling, this is a safe place, I promise." Jani stood up and walked over to me, and gave me a hug. She smelled like a garden, like hundreds of beautiful flowers. I felt woozy from her hug and tired from talking. I yawned.
"I suppose I can tell you about our organization tomorrow. You can sleep here for the night." Jani ran and fetched pillows and a blanket. She arranged them nicely on a cream white couch. I plopped down, thanking her. She kissed my forehead and said goodnight. Jani was like the mother I never had.
"Goodnight, Lucy," John added. I fell asleep.
