The next evening after spending the whole day alone and preparing for her first date, Caitlin found herself sat in her bedroom, staring at herself in the mirror. Barry was to pick her up at seven and she had just gotten out of the shower and dried her hair. She needed to get ready with two hours to spend making herself look perfect. She wanted him to impressed and especially wanted for him to call her beautiful again.
She looked over to her bed to see the white dress with pink flowers on that she'd laid out on the bed. The back was longer than the front and had spaghetti straps on the shoulders. The skirt was more flowing than the top which was tighter from the waist up in quite a flattering way- or at least so she thought. She hoped that Barry would think so too. She even considered putting on some makeup- only a little and very light and natural-looking. Almost as if she wasn't wearing any at all and it wouldn't augment her appearance in any way. The most noticeable thing would be the lipstick and that she wore in hope that he would kiss her tonight. She blushed at the thought.
After the quick application which only took a minute or two, she got up and dressed being very careful not to crease the dress or mess up her hair. Caitlin sat on the edge of her four-poster bed and surveyed the room. The room was quite large with wooden flooring and white walls. She had her soft white fluffy rug and fairy lights all over the room. All the furniture was expensive oak: her bookcase was alphabetised with all her books, her bedside tables were filled with her notebooks and her dressing table.
Often she liked to look out the window to the garden. Her room was right on top of their patio and so right below her window, there was the fence wall with roses growing in between the gaps in the fence. When she was little she used to climb the wall from the garden to the bedroom. If she left her window open, she could climb right into the room without any fuss.
Caitlin sighed as she finished getting ready, putting her favourite necklace around her neck. It wasn't particularly expensive but that was why she loved it. It was simple and not something outrageous. Realising that she still had about an hour and a half until Barry would arrive, she sat at her desk and read through her latest improvement for her plan. Even though she knew nothing would ever come of it, she still wanted to improve her work as much as she could. The idea had only come to her recently but she was inspired that she had to make this her first manuscript.
Meanwhile, Barry was putting last minute preparations together for the date. He'd booked the restaurant, hoping that it would be up to her standards, found himself an appropriate outfit and now he just had to get his dad to agree to lend him the car. The last day hadn't been the best with his parents and Grace teasing him every moment they could. His mother wouldn't stop taking photos of him in the shirt and tie that he was wearing and kept on gushing about 'her little boy going on his first date'. His dad hadn't been much better especially when he needed the car so badly.
Sure, he could take Caitlin out in his car- the Toyota that was falling apart- but he'd much rather taken her out in his dad's Audi.
"Come on, dad, please let me take the car. I promise I'll get it back in perfect condition. Did I not you that she's the senator's daughter? Or that her mother is a millionaire restauranteur? She's modest about the money and I know she doesn't care for it but I want to do better than a banged up old car that's falling apart. I want to impress her" he tried to persuade but coming off more desperate than anything else. "Besides, I've driven it before and I've never even caused a scratch on it. Please"
"Fine, fine. But one scratch and you'll be paying for it. And doing triple the chores daily and I don't want to see any excuses" his father agreed, throwing him the keys which he quickly caught.
It wasn't long before he had to leave and he carefully drove the car out of its place in the garage with his father watching intently. However, no disasters occurred so he was waved off by his family on his way to his date. When he arrived, however, he quickly realised why she'd never asked him to drop her off outside her house- the place was gated.
