you and i
we started out as a flicker
not even hardly a little bit of anything
then someone threw wood onto our spark
and our flame grew bright and strong
it exploded into the air
reaching for the night sky
and the silver stars that
danced there
we were a wildfire
we burned every leaf every wall every twig in between us
and became a beacon to the world
we were hearts
of fire
born in flames
--until we ran out of fuel
we scrambled for wood for leaves for paper for something to burn
but there was none left
and we slowly collapsed into coals
dying embers
that could no longer reach for
the beckoning
stars
we burned too fast too bright too hot
and we payed the price of a
slow death
i watched us die
our hearts shriveling to ash
we were nothing but
smoke in the
wind
[the worst part is
i saw it coming]
