"Noah, do you even know what love is?"
Noah goes slack, face covered in shock.
"Stop!" I come in the middle of the both of them. "Please, just stop.."
"Ronnie, you're not seeing him anymore, I'm gonna make sure of that."
"She's human, shes not a fucking dog you can keep tied up!"
"She's my sister!"
"Enough!" I'm crying now. "Will, I love Noah, okay. I want to keep seeing him, and you can't stop me. You guys are best friends, please, I can't... I can't pull you two apart."
"Then break up with him," Will says so simply, crossing his arms. "If you want us to stay friends, break up with him."
"I-"
"No Ronnie, really. If you really think I can stay friends with Thurman after all this, keep dating him."
"Will, I can't-"
"I can." I turn to Noah, confusion all over my face. "You're right Will, I don't even know what love is, I've never felt it before I spent these past few months with Ronnie. Not romantic love. But I love you man, you're my best friend. You've been there since elementary school for me. You've never asked me for anything."
Will's anger turns to something unreadable as Noah turns to me. "Ronnie, I think we should break up. The bands going on another tour soon, anyway, and with your law school I don't know if I can do long distance-"
"No, Noah, please, stop."
"And I think you deserve something more than me, basically. Yeah." He pulls something out of his pocket. "I wasn't really going to get dinner tonight, I was getting this, but um- you can return it if you want it." He puts it in my hand, and kisses my forehead. "Have a nice life, Ryder."
"Noah, wait, please don't do this, I can- we can-" I grab his arm as he's about to step into his car. He turns around and smiles, whispering something.
"He's your brother, V. And yeah, you were right. He's practically mine too. I can't do this to him."
"You told me you loved me," I sob, begging for him to stay.
"And I still will." He squeezes my hand as he steps in his car and shuts the door. "I don't think I can stop loving you, Ryder."
And like that, he's off. And it's not until his car disappears out of sight on the road that I crumpled onto the driveway, ignoring the stink of cement scraping my knees as I sit there and cry, muffled wailing sobs, until Max comes and pulls me into a hug.
