Minho and Gally throw me into the Pit. Other boys crowd around the door, staring at me, laughing at me. Little vulnerable me. Eventually they get tired and walk away leaving me alone.

I try to get the knots around my hands untied, but it doesn't work. I try to shove the rag out of my mouth, that doesn't work either. "How am I supposed to survive without any food or water? I can't even remember that last time I ate or drank anything." I think to myself. I listen to the sounds of my empty stomach, eating itself to nothing.

I hear footsteps approaching the doorway of the pit. I scoot toward the back where it's dark and hope they won't see me.

They crouch down by the door, looking in. I am glad to see the familiar faces of Newt and Thomas.

"How ya doin' Shank?" Thomas asks me. I shake my head in response. I feel awful.

I see sadness fill his eyes. I feel more blood from my split lip run down my chin again.

"Let me get that off of you." Newt says.

At first I resist, but eventually I turn around and face the back of the pit, my back as close to the door as I can reach. It takes them awhile to untie the many knots Gally created. They release the rag from my mouth and once again I gag from the release of pressure. Newt drops the bloody rag onto the pit floor.

I turn back around, trying to maneuver my body with my hands tied around my back. When I turn to face them.

"Thank you." I say quietly. I feel hot tears fill my eyes. Tears of relief. I turn away. I don't want them to see me cry, or anyone else in the Glade.

"No problem, Greenie." Thomas responds.

It's awkwardly quiet for a minute or so. I finally ask them. "Why are you helping me? Everyone else here seems to hate me." I say sadly.

"Because your....different. Your not like the other boys here." Newt responds.

"Why? Because I'm the only girl?"

"Your not the first girl to be in the Glade." I look up as Thomas answers. "There was one girl, not that long after I arrived. Her name was Teresa. One day she went into the maze without permission. She tied a vine around her neck, and committed suicide." Thomas says in a lonely voice.

"She killed herself?" I say surprisingly. Newt nods. "Not that long ago actually."

"I'm sorry." I say sadly. "I'm so sorry."

"Why are you apologizing? It wasn't your fault?" Thomas responds.

"I feel horrible. And it makes me kind of nervous."

"Why's that, Greenie?" I look up at Newt as he talks.

"Because I'm afraid I'm going to die in here. Everyone hates me. I don't belong."

"But you do! You just don't see it yet." Newt kneels closer to the door of the pit. "Your curious. You can help us leave this place." I see a glimmer of hope fill Newt's eyes.

"What are you doing over there, you klunk-heads?" Alby's voice fills the pit as he screams to Newt and Thomas.

The quickly turn around and stand.

"Just making fun of the Shank." Newt responds. Alby nods and turns back to his work.

They turn back and face me. "We'll be back later, Greenie." They walk away.

I look at the ground as a smile spread across my face. The first time I've felt happy since I got here. At least I have two friends here.
