I sit by the door, waiting for the doorbell to ring. Anticipating seeing the older. I hadn't had time alone with him since he got back.
The sound of the doorbell buzzes throughout the room. I jump up, a wave of excitement washes over me. I pull the door open and see Jaemin's smiling face staring back at me. I felt my heart skip a beat. It was just like old times.
"Hey Ji," Jaemin says.
"Hey," I respond with a wide smile.
"Well, someone's happy to see me," Jaemin comments with a soft chuckle. I chuckle back at him but my heart flutters at the comment.
I step out of the house, closing the door behind me. We begin walking along the sidewalk towards the bus stop in silence.
"So, where are you taking me Ji. Your plans were very vague."
"To the festival the school is holding. The dance team said I had to come and I didn't want to go alone so I thought I'd ask you," I ramble.
Jaemin chuckles at me to which I look over at him in confusion.
"You're so cute Jisung," he says. He looks over at me, his bright smile almost blinding. I quickly look back at the sidewalk, my ears burning.
The fair was a basic one week carnival. They even had a few miniature rollercoasters and a Farris wheel set up. It was no doubt that the soccer fundraisers payed for that. They had also set up food booths with the cooking clubs running them and a few games ran by other random clubs.
"What's your teams booth," Jaemin asks, looking around to see if he could spot it.
"A dance competition," I respond, "Are the seniors doing anything?"
"The principle gave us a break this year."
I nod in response as I pay for our tickets. I hand half of them to Jaemin.
"Hey! I was gonna pay for my own," he says, faking anger.
"Calm down, let me treat you," I say with a chuckle. A small smile appears on Jaemin's face.
"Well, what are we waiting for, let's get going." Suddenly he grabs my hand, running, dragging me across the grass.
My heart sped up and my hand was tingling. A blush had settled on my cheeks from the contact.
The next two hours were a blur of playing games, eating food, going on the rides and Jaemin's pretty smile. So this is what love feels like? For the first time in the past two years, everything felt right.
The sun was long down by now and it was almost time for the fireworks.
"Let's go on the Farris wheel before we take our seat to watch the fireworks," I suggest. I could already feel the nerves settling in my stomach. You have to do it Jisung, no more wasting time. You've already wasted two years.
"Ok, let's go," Jaemin says, a bright smile settled on his lips. We walk side by side making small conversation, the temptation to hold his hand was almost over whelming.
After getting settled, the ride starts. I want to reach over to Jaemin as we got higher. Heights weren't really my thing, I enjoyed being on the ground.
"Are you scared?"
"N-No," I stutter trying to keep my gaze off of the ground. Jaemin puts his arm around me causing my heart to flutter.
"Don't be scared. I'm right here."
The Farris wheel stops at the top. Now was the time. I take in a deep breath.
"Jaemin, I need to tell you something." He looks at me confused yet ready for me to continue.
"Jaemin I-I like you," I say, looking him right in the eyes. Jaemin's smile slowly fades as he realizes the gravity of what I just said.
"Jisung...you know I'm with Renjun. Why would you tell me this now? Was that really why you brought me here," he asks slightly angry, taking his arm off of my shoulder. His sudden outburst confused me. Had I done something wrong?
We started moving again.
"I know you're with Renjun, b-but it's not real. You like me, you have too," I explain.
"I don't have to do anything. Why would I have to like you," Jaemin asks, scooting further away.
"Because it makes sense," I try to explain. We reach the start again and Jaemin quickly gets off and speeds away. I quickly walk after him.
"Jaemin." I grab onto his wrist.
"Jisung, let go. I'm going home."
"Why?"
"Because you're acting stupid! Do you seriously not hear yourself talking right now?"
I remain silent. I had nothing to say. He yanks his arm away and continues walking.
"And don't think of calling, texting or talking to me anytime soon," he says.
"So you're going to choose someone you've known for a year over your best friend," I yell. I wasn't sure where the rage had come from.
"If you think I belong to you, then are we really good friends Ji," Jaemin says coldly. I could feel the tears in my eyes. He turns back around and continues walking, not without me noticing him throw his ring into a trash can.
Tears run down my cheeks as the fireworks begin. My chest began to feel tight. It was too constricting. I had to get out of here.
I quickly walk to the bus station, Jaemin was already gone. As I walk, the rage settles itself inside.
What did Renjun have that he didn't? Who even was Renjun? And why was he trying to ruin my life?!
I didn't go home that night. I went somewhere secret, somewhere safe. Somewhere I could make a plan.
Jaemin will love me once everyone else is gone. It'll just be him and I, together forever.
