Chapter 2
I finally got my legs to work again, took some deep breaths and ran through the now empty school corridors. My head was filled with mixed thoughts and I didn't know whether to feel like crying or screaming. I ran into the fresh air and took another deep breath. I looked around me and could see all the Jock's playing footy on the large oval, the girls sitting in their little gossip corner and the nerds on their computers and reading books.
Where was he? And no, I wasn't looking for Alec, I was looking for my best friend, Nick. I felt someone behind me and spun around and smiled. He stood much taller than me, since I'm so short and he had a perfect smile that made me feel giddy inside.
"Hey!" I said, giving him a hug. He pretended to fall back, as if I was really that strong. We both ended up laughing on the ground. I ignored the stares from all the girls, including
He stood up and offered his hand which I took. He pulled me up like I weighed nothing and I was continuly amazed at how strong he was.
"Hey yourself. Where have you been? My life was absolute misery without you" He teased me and I playfully hit him on his arm.
"I was stuck behind in class" I sighed, suddenly remembering what had made me upset before.
Nick crossed his arms and raised his eyebrow. Damn, I wish I could do that!
"I don't mean in trouble. I mean the teacher asked me, well he really didn't give me a choice, but he told me to tutor...Alec Farely" I spat out the last word.
Nick burst out laughing and couldn't stop. I was taken aback at his reaction so I decided to just scowl at him till he stopped.
His laughter died down as he saw my face until he looked normal.
"You're serious? Wait, you weren't joking?" He suddenly had a strange expression on his face that I couldn't read.
I put my hands on my hips, apparently I do this when I'm mad according to Nick.
"Why would I be joking about this?!" I had to control my voice because I felt like I was going to cry.
Nick led me over to our usual spot, under an old oak tree there was a bench we sat at.
I took out my lunch and scowled at the tuna sandwhich that I found.
"Urrrghhhh. I hate tuna!!! This is sooo not my day" I moaned. Nick smiled and I again felt slightly giddy, before shaking it out of my head. He's just a best friend, just a best friend.
Nick pulled out his lunch and I looked in envy at his vegiemite sandwhich.
He caught me staring and chuckled under his breath. "Wanna swap?"
I tried raising an eyebrow, but by the sounds of Nick's laugh, I'd obviously failed.
"You hate tuna" I said, quite confused.
"Yes, but I also hate vegemite" Hie wouldn't meet my eyes and his voice was low. He was lying for sure.
I stood over him, abodoning my tuna sandwich. "Nick, I've known you forever! You love vegimte!"
Nick looked up with an amazing grin which made me feel quite faint. Stop this Jessica! HE's just your friend.
"I don't love it that much" He smiled, knowing he'd been caught out.
We both continued laughing and I took a bite out of my tuna sandwich unconsciously and almost choked on it. I spat it out and the look on Nick's face was priceless.
We both laughed so hard, until I was almost crying, when suddenly Nick stopped.
"What?" I asked, still lightly laughing. He was looking at something behind me and I had a feeling i didn't want to turn around.
Nick's face ahd that strange expression I'd seen on it earlier with a mixture of hatred as well.
I slowly turned around and froze in shock. It was Alec. I instantly took a sttep back and would have tripped if Nick hadn't caught me.
I tried to calm myself down and focus. "What do you want?" I realised those words hadn't come out of my mouth, but Nick's.
Alec glared at Nick, before turning back to me.
"Hey Jessica. Um, apparently you're going to tutor me" He had no emotion on his face and his voice was mono-tone.
"Apparently" I muttered under my breath. I suddenly felt bad, cause I think he heard me and for a second I thought I registered hurt on his face.
"So, when and where?" He asked. I felt my heart beat faster as his eyes were on me. They were so beautiful and his black hair was stuck up at funny angles, yet it looked great. I suddenly realized I was staring and quickly controlled myself.
"How about, my house on a thursday night?" I quickly said avoiding his eyes, worried I'd get caught in them again.
"Sure. See ya then. By the way. We're doing shakespeare right? I think it's Romeo and Juliet" Then he walked off towards Georgia who kissed him on the cheek.
My heart started to beat even faster and also loudly. It was so loud that I swore people must have been able to hear it.
"I'm doomed!!!!" I moaned. I waited for Nick to laugh at my joke or something but it was silent.
I turned to Nick and found him staring at me. I blushed a deep red and quickly looked down. Just a friend, just you're best friend.
"Something wrong?" I asked, after I was sure I wasn't blushing anymore.
"Nothing" But he wouldn't meet my eyes, which made me worried. WHat was wrong with him?
The bell rung again. And I sighed. Nick seemed to be silent as we walked to our next class which we were both in.
I was dreading Thursday, but even though it annoyed me, part of me was looking forward to it...
