Chapter 4

Friday at school was a drag, I hate Fridays. This is because Saturday is so close, but you’ve still gotta live through another day. I thought about staying home since my parents were away, but that would ruin my perfect attendance award. I really didn’t want to turn up to school with my bandaged ankle. This reminded me of last night, which sent a shiver down my spine, but I couldn’t tell why.

I limped down the hall, slung my bag over my shoulder and looked in the mirror. My hair was sticking out at funny angles, dark rings hung under my eyes, probably from not being able to fall asleep.

I made my way to school after making myself look better presented and went to find Nick. He was sitting at the usual spot, but something about him looked off.

“Hey buddy!” I plopped my bag down next to him and smiled. He looked at me with a blank expression before his eyes feel to my sprained ankle.

“What did he do to you?” I assumed he was joking but I couldn’t tell. Nick’s eyes were wide with horror and I suddenly felt a bit nervous.

He didn’t do anything, you know how uncoordinated I am. I slipped on some broken vase that happened to be on the floor” I tried to laugh at this, but Nick’s expression cut me off.

I sat down next to him feeling very worried. He seemed to be scowling at the ground, which he always did if he was mad.

“Are you ok?” I asked, trying to sound calm, but panic leaked into my voice.

Nick looked up at me and suddenly his face looked scared and desperate.

“Jessica, you tell me everything right?” He said. He waited for an answer as I tried to figure out why he’d asked his question.

“Of course I tell you everything! I’m your best friend! Why did you ask?” I bit my lip.

Nick closed his eyes shut and was shaking but I could only hope it was not with anger.

“Never mind” He hissed through bared teeth.

My eyes were watering in shock and confusion, why was he acting like this?

I reached out to touch his shoulder. “Nick, if something’s bothering you I can help-“

“Don’t touch me,” HE said recoiling. He looked at me as if I was a monster. I felt like I’d been slapped, hard.

“Nick, what’s-“

He glared at me. “Leave me alone Jessica” And with that he stormed off.

I couldn’t hold in tears any longer, I felt my nose twitching and already something wet rolling down my cheek. I sprinted to the girl’s bathroom just making it in time before bursting out in tears. I cried for a while before finally pulling myself together. I looked at myself in the mirror and gasped in shock.

I had red blotches beneath my eyes and my face was all puffy. I flushed my face with water a couple times and dried myself off until I looked a little better. That’s when the bell rang.

I sulked as I made my way to class. Why had Nick been so angry? I just didn’t understand. We’d been best friends for ages.

I put my stuff down at the first desk I saw as I walked into the Art room. The words Howard Arkley were scrawled on the blackboard in white chalk and I knew I was in for a very rough lesson.
