Recap: I looked into the familiar eyes I knew so well.

“Nick” I whimpered.

Chapter 9

It was all too much. My knees buckled from beneath me and I fell to the cold ground, never letting my eyes turn away from Nick’s crumpled body.

“Jessica! Get up and stay back!” Alec hissed in my ear furiously.

I stood up but my world swayed. “How could you say that? Do you know who that is!? That’s Nick from school! There’s a mistake! We have to help him!”

Alec’s face was grave and for a moment I saw him in a new darkness. His dark ashy black hair, brushing above his green eyes that were weary. His clothes covered in a blood that I hadn’t noticed before and the grimace on his face.

He wasn’t going to do anything. He stood uncomfortably, shifting from side to side. I knew he felt bad, but orders were orders. But I wasn’t held down by any orders.

I pushed Alec off me and made a quick second decision. I sprinted towards Nick my vision blurry with tears, but the bright red colour of blood and its smell led me.

SLAM! I bashed into something rock solid that made me stumble backwards blindly. I looked up feeling groggy and saw Alec standing over me. Damn that teleporting thing.

I ran around him and I was only about ten metres from Nick. Harrison and the broad shouldered red head were starting to drag him off. But I bet I could get there in time.

Suddenly something grabbed my wrist and yanked me back tightly before I was spinning with that horrible flying sensation in my stomach. I landed on the ground and looked up. Outside the warehouse. Looks like I might not get to Nick in time.

“I’m sorry Jess but it’s not safe in there, with you running towards danger all the time” Alec offered his hand but I swatted it away.

I crawled to my feet and glared at Alec. “You get me back in there right now! You had no right taking me out here!”

Alec wore a tired expression and sighed wearily. “I can’t do that”

“Can you let me see Nick?” I asked running my hands through my messed up hair. I was trembling with worry. What were they doing with Nick? There’s a mistake.

“I can’t do that either” Alec’s voice was blank and he wore no expression this time. I think he knew where this was going.

“Can you tell me why Nick is in there covered in blood?!” I cried.

Alec slowly shook his head stiffly, hands clenched in fists at his side.

“What can you do!??” I yelled at the top of my voice.

Alec spun back to me and a look of fury crossed his face.

“You think I like upsetting you? NO! I wish I could help but trust me, you don’t want to be in there!”

I shrivelled back in fear at his outburst. I closed my eyes and clenched them shut.

“I just need you to tell me what’s going on. Please.” I whispered. I could picture in my mind Nick lying on the ground. Maybe dying. I felt a strong gust of wind and a strange sensation.

“Alec?” I slowly opened my eyes and gasped. I was in a small white room. Alone. There was no door, only one large window.

I heard a harsh cough followed by a gurgling noise that made me feel like throwing up. No, not alone.
