"You realize such dramatics will only get your clothes wet," Loki annoyingly pointed out after you re-stuffed your face in the snowy substance. "Then you'll probably die of exposure."
You looked up at him sharply. "Who cares? If I don't die of exposure, you'll probably just kill me anyway."
Loki laughed, as if at a child who'd said something funny. "What would give you that idea?" He continued on before you could point out his murderous tendencies, "By killing you, I would only serve in trapping myself on this unpleasant planet alone. I believe I need you if I ever want to get off this bloody rock."
You struggled to your feet, looking up to the grey sky like you thought you might be able to see the Bifrost. "What the hell happened, anyway? We were all there, and then I heard. . .I heard something and I knew you and I were the only ones who were going to be allowed to get here. Has that ever happened before?"
Loki shook his head, eyes wearily roaming your surroundings. "We need to get out of the open."
"Is it really that dangerous here?" you asked, trying to sound nonchalant.
"More so than you know, I fear."
He stepped up lightly from the place his feet had sank into the snow, and surprised you by getting up on its surface and not sinking into it again. Perplexed, you bent down and touched the the white ice with gloved fingers. It was much firmer than you had originally mistaken it for. "What is this stuff?" You asked suspiciously, planting your foot on an unbroken piece of it. You sank in, unlike him.
"It's ice," Loki replied. "But it's not very thick. More like. . . frozen snow, sort of. Difficult to trudge through, but you can walk on it, if you're careful. No, stop, not like that. You're crushing it. It's fragile. Shift you're weight onto gently. Good. Now do try not to stomp."
He started off in a direction seemingly picked at random, walking atop the strange snow-ice surface like it was a solid. You fell into it four times trying to follow. It came up almost to your knees, and was harder to get back up onto than it was to maintain yourself on the surface.
"Do you even know where we are?" You asked calmly, trying to keep your distance from him while staying as close as possible. He could likely feel your fear, but curse it if you were going to let it show.
"I have an inkling," was the less-than-reassuring response. He didn't seem at all troubled, however, so you bit your tongue and didn't ask anything more.
You pulled your cloak tightly around you as it billowed in the wind. You hadn't a clue as to how Loki was telling direction. As far as you could see, there was no sun to indicate east, west, north or south. Considering it further, you decided you couldn't really be sure that those things were relevant in this strange realm.
It felt like hours as you walked. Your attention was mostly occupied in staying upon the ice and not falling into it again. It was harder than your traveling companion was making it look.
As you were coming around a large glacier of ice that resembled a frozen hill, Loki put his arm out and stopped. You did so too. He turned to look at you and said very quietly, "I'm going to have to ask you to remain as silent as possible from here in. I really don't want to have to babysit you, but I think it's quite possible that leaving you alone would be far more dangerous than taking you with me."
With you where? you thought with frustration. We are in the middle of nowhere. I haven't seen another living being since we got here.
"Where are we going?" you asked, matching your volume to the one he had employed.
"I thought it logical that we should follow the map that your visions laid out so neatly for us," he said. "Your dilapidated castle is ahead. Unfortunately, it's guarded by frost giants."
