You wanted to face-palm. "Kill the queen? Why? What good would that do? What are you thinking?"

He gave you a surprised stare. "Well, it seems obvious, doesn't it? The queen has king's blood, and she was sure that was important, so if we kill her, then she won't find what it is she seeks. How the hell would we evacuate an entire planet?"

"I hadn't figured the logistics out just yet, but this place a time bomb waiting to explode. Everyone needs to either get off, or die."

"What would be so bad about the end coming to this planet?"

"Loki, just because you tried to blow it up back in the day doesn't mean it's justified. There are citizens here. If the queen does find that thing, then people will burn."

"Unless she is truly capable of controlling it, as she seems to think she is. Killing her would kill two bilgeshnipe with one sword."

"What in the ever-loving fuck is a buildsnipe?"

He whistled. "Such language. Bilgeshnipe or no, your plan is impossible. The Bifrost doesn't seem to be able to touch this place, save for trapping us here, for whatever reason."

"Well, your plan is no work of mastery either. We don't even know where the blasted woman is."

You shared a look. "You know as well as I do," Loki said slowly, "that that leaves us with one last resort."

You sighed. "I know. Find that thing, and kill it."

"And I would really rather not. I'm fond of my own skin, and it would be a shame to see it flayed."

"Can you be serious?"

"Oh, I'm deadly serious. Only maddened fools would voluntarily go looking for it. Whatever creature lurks in that ancient prison, I imagine it was put there for a very good reason."

"Or a very bad one."

Loki quit his pacing and sat down next to you, mimicking your posture and pulling his knees up closely. "We'll work it out. There has got to be a way."

"Oh my god, I think I'm going to drop dead! Was that. . . optimism?"

Loki grinned, shaking his head. "Mere fact. You and I are determined, if nothing else."

The two of you drifted off into silence, thinking. Your examination of the current data suggested that Loki may not be too far off with his idea to kill Irina. At the very least, it may serve to find her, if only to know her movements. Loki's bluff had been entirely fabricated when he implied that there were other Asgardian forces on Jotunheim looking for the newly awakened (or newly discovered) power.

You had questions that needed answering. You took time to consider them each. The first and foremost, you decided, was the question, 'what exactly am I dealing with?'

It seemed, from the way your vision had shown it imprisoned, that the beast had long since been sleeping. Its awakening had somehow alerted the Jotuns, who may have just finished a succession war for the throne. Irina had spoken as if she knew what it was, which led you to the conclusion that there must be some sort of record of the thing.

The next step in your mission seemed to be finding that record. It may answer a few of the more cosmic questions you held, such as why you were the one trying to put a stop to whatever destruction would unfold if the creature was released--

Something fell onto your shoulder.

You jolted back to reality, heart thumping, to discover Loki had fallen fast asleep next to you. You let out a breath, wondering how long you had been sitting there in contemplation. Long enough, apparently, for the Asgardian to drop off. He had tipped sideways, resting against your shoulder. You gently maneuvered him so he could lay down more comfortably, head pillowed on your lap.
