Y/N and Bucky Barnes hate each other. An interesting decision to make then for Nick Fury to make to put them on a mission together...

S.H.I.E.L.D. and its agents are very diverse. So many different people are employed by S.H.I.E.L.D - some with enhanced abilities, powers and mutations, many without, though all highly specialised and trained. Y/N was one such agent; though without superpowers, very quick thinking, skilled in combat and disguise, and highly lethal when necessary.

One James Buchanan Barnes would disagree with that though.

You did have a superpower.

Being the most giant pain in his ass to have existed.

And this was saying a lot.

Bucky had managed to survive pre-serum Steve Rogers, post-serum Steve Rogers, H.Y.D.R.A. and the entirety of the Avengers - yet Y/N managed to be more irritating than all of them combined.

And you would say the same thing about him. There are over 7 trillion nerves in the human body - and somehow James Buchanan Barnes was able to get on every single one of them. He fought dirty in combat training, he was obnoxious during meetings and he flirted relentlessly with anything and anyone he could. He hadn't always been like this - you had even liked him at first. But after everything had died down around him, and Tony, and the human Labrador known as Steve Rogers, Bucky seemed to have relaxed and settled into some old ways of his.

And you did not appreciate his 1940s attitudes.

Despite your mutual despisal of each other, despite your refusal to work together on small scale projects within S.H.I.E.LD., despite your inability to be in a room together without it inevitably and almost immediately devolving into a fight (most of the time verbally, but sometimes physically too) - Nick Fury in his infinite wisdom paired Y/N and Bucky for a mission together.

And attempting to argue with Fury - let's just say, it's not an option.

A stealth mission, to retrieve stolen goods from a headquarters for notorious criminals.

Getting in would not be the problem. Oh no. Getting in? Piece of cake. Getting out, with the goods and alive? Less so. However, Y/N was sure if they stuck to her plan and did everything very precisely -

"I can't believe you didn't listen to me!" you scream at your mission partner over the roaring sound of gunfire. Bullets ricochet off the walls behind you as you hide behind crates, seething with rage.
"I had to! Your plan was stupid!" Bucky fires back with extreme accuracy - but you know better. You're both goddamn trapped behind these crates because -
"You just had to shoot that guy, huh? It's called a stealth mission! A retrieval mission! Not kill a guy and get us killed in the process!"

The noise Bucky makes is almost a snarl as he darts behind the next row of boxes.
"He would have shot me. He had noticed us, and obviously recognised me," he growled back at you.
"How the hell would he have recognised you? And how could you not shooting at him have made this any worse?!"
"BECAUSE HE WAS A H.Y.D.R.A. OPERATIVE!" he yells, taking aim again. "He has seen my files and assigned me missions - he knows everything about me. If I didn't kill him, he would have been able to make things so much worse, worse than you could ever understand."
Those last words came out bitter and pained and, for the first time since you had met Bucky, you felt a sympathy for him. A further understanding of perhaps why he was like that.
