"Wow. She's so gorgeous," Clara breathes, hugging tiny Claire close to her.
"Of course she is. With her parents? We knew how gorgeous she was going to be," Richie replies.
"That's the sweetest thing I've ever heard you say!" Carn drops the stuffed animals she's packing and throws her arms around him, beginning to tear up.
"Okay, okay," he pats her back awkwardly. Even though Claire was born two weeks ago, Carn's hormones are still all over the place, and the Losers all have to deal with her emotions going here and there and everywhere. However, the doctor said this is completely normal and could last for up to six or eight weeks.
After being in the NICU for countless nights, Claire is finally ready to go home. Although she had acquired a scar from the tubes she wore in the incubator, she's perfectly healthy. Carn and Bill are encouraged to always feed her regularly and keep skin to skin contact- which they are perfectly fine with, seeing as they're both big cuddlers.
Claire is nicknamed their "miracle baby." Her chance of survival was rare, but she's doing absolutely amazing for being such an early preemie. She's a sweet, happy baby too. Claire is always smiling.
When she's finally let out of the hospital, every one of Carn and Bill's friends jumps to help her transition into Bill's. Luckily, Carn got a bassinet at the shower, and Bill moved it from Mike's house to his room.
It's comical, really, that the neglectful Zack and Sharon are stuck with a baby who screams at night and a second mouth to feed, as Carn is moving in, too.
"What is this world coming to?" Sharon asks her husband when she came home to a screaming baby that day. "Our son is only seventeen, and he had a baby, and he never even bothered telling us?? We just had to figure it out when Carnation started to get all big. And then when we asked him about it, he was acting like we did something wrong. Why do these things happen to us?"
He can only shrug in response.
Despite Mr. and Mrs. Denbrough's strange attitudes, Bill and Carn are having the time of their lives. Claire really is a miracle, an angel, a blessing. They take a month off school to care for their bundle of joy. Every single day is filled with love- snuggling with Claire, showering her with kisses, feeding her, playing with her stuffed animals. Of course there are some not so fabulous jobs as well, like changing her diapers and taking turns calming down the nocturnal infant at three in the morning.
The couple also has time to watch tons of movies during Claire's naps- Dirty Dancing (Carn's favorite), Dazed and Confused (what Bill claims to be his favorite), and Pretty Woman (Bill's actual favorite).
The Losers are also the most supportive best friends in the world. They make meals almost nightly for them, give them rides so Bill can save gas money, and also do their best to catch them up on schoolwork. Life is heavenly, as close to perfect as humanly possible.
But when it's time to go back to school, well, that's when the "shit hit the fan," in Eddie's words. They have to hire a sitter stat, Carn scrambles to find a job to help pay for everything (she finds one at a local secondhand clothing store), and they have to work harder than ever because they spend more time paying attention to their baby than doing their scholwork (shocking).
The strangest and most worrisome thing of all, though, is the lack of harassment and bullies. Some of Greta's minions are even semi-sweet, asking Carn for pictures. Luckily, since Asper had graduated, there wasn't any of him to worry about, but it's eerie. Greta never misses a chance to hurt someone, especially "perfect little Carn."
Carn and Bill try not to let it worry them too much. She may have found another victim to terrorize, after all. Or maybe she just grew up. They need let it go, to enjoy the last few months of high school and wait in suspense for college acceptance letters.
After two eventless weeks of being back at the hell that is Derry High, they are forced to accept that Greta really was done with them. But boy, is the pair wrong.
