Prologue

Prologue

"Ira, can I have your water?" tanong ni Euphy sa akin.

I checked my tumblr while she closed hers. Nang nakita kong may laman pa ay agad kong inabot sa kanya.

"Here.. Just spare me a bit. Malayo layo pa tayo sa bukana ng gubat."

"This is so tiring... Can we sit in that big rock first? I just wanna rest," sabi nito habang hinahabol ang hininga. "Hayyy, I don't even know why I agreed with this hiking... mountain climbing, thing of yours."

"Isn't it fun? You know, you've got to see the beauty of nature."

"This is just not my thing. Kung hindi lang talaga ako nag-aalala na mag-isa kang pupunta dito, siguro hinayaan na kita sa mga trip mo." I smiled at her confession.

"You know I can do this alone, but I appreciate your care. I love you, Euphy."

I hugged her sideway and rest my head on her left shoulder. Euphemia Azuello is my half sister. Though we came from different wombs I still treat her as my true sister. I share everything to her. Every little detail of me, she knows it. I survived because of her.

"I don't know why Mav lets you with this." Umiling siya.

"Manliligaw ko pa lang naman si Mav. At kahit noong wala pa siya ay ginagawa ko na 'to and he needs to accept it. He can't just enjoin me with the things I love," sabi ko.

Tumingin sya sa akin at halata ang pagkagulat.

"Wait... What?! Mav's just a suitor?! Bakit di mo pa sinasagot?"

I shrugged. "We're not in a relationship. But he knows he has a place in my... life."

"Bakit life lang? Sa heart ba wala pa?"

Hindi ko na pinansin ang tanong niya. Siguro ay naramdaman din nya na ayaw ko munang pag-usapan.

"Well anyway, going back, I got your point. Pero sobrang delikado lang kasi talaga. And I just find forest and mountain so creepy and mysterious."

"To be honest, I don't even know why I endulged myself into this. Well, maybe, me being tired of the city is a factor," sabi ko habang tumititig sa mga puno, "but I can't just deny the fact that I found my peace here. This is where I can say that I'm free. This may sound weird but... I feel like... there's a connection between me and the nature."

"I know that... I'm just worried, Ira. I'm afraid this is where you'll lose yourself."

"Stop overthinking, Euphy," sabi ko dahil bumagabag na rin sa isip ko ang mga salita nya. "Tara na bago pa tayo abutan ng gabi dito."

Tumayo na ako habang inabot ko naman ang kamay ko kay Euphy upang alalayan sya sa kanyang pagtayo. Pinagpatuloy na namin ang paglalakad palabas ng gubat.

May tag-isa kaming hawak na mahabang tangkay upang pang-alis ng mga bagay na maaaring sumagabal sa lalakaran namin. Sa kanan ko ay si Euphy na pawisan at malamya na.

Euphy is effortlessly beautiful. Even without a full coverage make up, I'm sure boys will crane a neck just to see her. Everytime I look at her, I can see a female version of our Dad only that she got her eyes from her Mom.

"Anyway, how's Daddy?" tanong ko habang tinutusok ang mga tuyong dahon na nadadaanan.

"He's doing good. Kakauwi nya lang from Canada. Kailan nga kayo huling nag-usap?" sabay lingon nya sakin. "Tamang tama! We can set up a dinner with him, just the three of us."
