"Just who trained you?" Lady Tsunade asked.

"That's something to be left in the past for now, Lady Tsunade," I replied and picked up my forehead protector before I shun shinned back to the ANBU.

Present

I put everything away in the cabinets so anyone could access them if needed and went to see if there was anyone in the medical bay. Luckily, there wasn't anyone that needed major treatment but a few with minor injuries that would heal within a few days. I sighed in relief.

"Ma'am! We got a problem!" An ANBU yelled from the doorway.

"Please, don't yell. What have we got?" I asked.

"The ANBU that you healed is coding and Lady Tsunade needs you over at Konoha general," he reported.

"I'll be there momentarily," I replied and shun shinned to Konoha's hospital. I focased for a moment and sensed Lady Tsunade's chakra. I ran to where I had sensed her chakra and saw her doing CPR.

"Took you long enough," she remarked.

"I barely received the request from one of my men. What have we got, ma'am?" I asked walking over to take over CPR so Lady Tsunade could have a break.

"He flatlined but a nurse managed to get him breathing again and called me in here when he started having a seizure. He flatline again almost immediately after I got here. I sent the nurse to call for you considering he's still your patient," she replied. I stopped doing chest compressions and checked for a pulse. I sighed in relief when I felt one, even if it was weak.

"He's got a pulse but it's weak. You have his medical history?" I asked, stepping back a bit.

"Shizune's working on it," she replied.

"Shizune?" I asked. I hadn't met the girl before.

"New apprentice. A good medic," Lady Tsunade replied. I nodded.

"Lady Tsunade!" A girl about my age ran into the room. She was panting and had a file tucked under her arm.

"Shizune. You have it?" Lady Tsunade asked.

"Yes, ma'am," Shizune replied, handing Lady Tsunade the file. Lady Tsunade almost immediately handed it over to me. I flipped it open and quickly read through it before taking a look at the state of his lungs. My eyes widened in shock of how badly scared they were.

"What's that look for? Kid?" Lady Tsunade asked.

"He has severe scarring on his lungs, likely from smoke inhalation, asthma, or something in that range. I doubt he'll be able to continue being an ANBU with this amount of internal scarring," I replied.

"Huh? You can tell all that from an examination?" Shizune asked.

"Yeah. Problem?" I asked in return.

"How?" She asked. I sighed and closed the file before tucking it under my arm.

"Come here for a second will you?" I asked. She quickly came to stand beside me.

"How?" She repeated.

"I'll explain. Say you had a hypothetical patient like this one that had flatlined with an unknown cause but you managed to get his heart beating again like we did here. How would you eliminate internal causes without using an X-ray?" I asked.

"You would do a field exam," Shizune replied.

"Correct. Once you get the hang of doing the field exam, it becomes second nature and your able to detect things an ordinary beginner wouldn't. Internal bleeding or scar tissue being among the things you can detects if you get good enough at it. Not everyone can do this so don't get yourself down because you can't," I said.

"You're one of the few that can?" She asked.

"Yes. Scar tissue, especially if there's a large mass of it, is among the easier things to spot using a field exam. Now, complete a field exam as you would normally. No assumptions, no expectations," I ordered.

"Got it. No assumptions, no expectations," Shizune repeated and started on a field exam. It didn't take her long to finish.

"Any abnormalities?" I asked.

"There was a slight one with his lungs but nothing else," Shizune replied.

"How would you deal with the abnormality?" I asked.

"First get a second opinion from another medic, likely someone better at medical ninjutsu than me. Then, after referring to the patients file, administer the necessary fluids or antibiotics to the patient," Shizune replied.

"Good. You're already a good medic, Shizune," I said.

"Really?!" Shizune asked, excited.

"Never heard that from your mentor?" I asked.

"I have but I never really believed it," she replied.

"Hey, kid. You remember the medic I told you about earlier?" Lady Tsunade asked.

"The one with the big mouth?" I asked. Lady Tsunade laughed.

"Yeah. That one. You match up to her level of skill. You ever meet her?" Lady Tsunade asked.

"You'd be surprised, Lady Tsunade," I replied. She sighed and hit the back of my head.

"She was always saying these rules and I'd hit her in the back of the head for it," Lady Tsunade said.

"Rule 5. You don't waste good," I said.

"So she told you, hm?" Lady Tsunade asked.

"We all need a code to live by, Lady Tsunade. That's just the one I use," I replied.

"It's a good one, kid," she said. I smiled.

"You... why did you... save me?" The ANBU rasped. My attention snapped to him.

"Why?" I repeated.

"Yes..." he rasped.

"I'd hate to see someone like you gone," I replied.

"Someone like... me? What does... what does... what does that mean?" He asked.

"You're a fighter. I wish I saw more like you cadet," I replied.

"Thank... you... but... sorry..." he whispered before he closed his eyes and flatlined. I immediately started doing chest compressions. Lady Tsunade had to pull me away from him.

"He's gone... isn't he?" I asked even though I already knew the answer.

"I'm sorry, kid," Lady Tsunade said after checking for his pulse.

"Time of death, 1:03 PM," I said, my words hanging heavy in the air. I couldn't bear the heaviness of the air and slowly made my way out of the hospital. I didn't really know where I was going but my feet were moving on their own. I didn't know how long I was walking but it was almost sunset when I finally made it to the KIA Stone in training ground three.

I heard someone come up behind me but I didn't bother looking up. I figured it was either Minato or Kakashi that was behind me. I didn't really want to see either at the moment though but I didn't want to be left alone with my own thoughts either. I knew being stuck inside my own head could be even more draining than seeing whoever was behind me.

"Rin..." I heard Minato say softly.

"I had a bad day," I said simply and turned to face him. He quickly walked up and wrapped me in a much needed hug. I hugged back and felt my tears start flowing freely.
