A common thing, we use all the time,
Colorful packs costing measly dimes,
Plastic straws are given no thought,
Used and thrown away soon after they're bought.Yet, do you ever stop to think,
About where these objects may end up?
Throwing them away sets in motion,
For many to end up in beautiful oceans. Not only does it pollute the water,
It also causes marine life slaughter,
Sea turtles, gentle and contented,
Killed by something we could've prevented. These innocent creatures, not very shrewd.
Swallowing straws, thinking it's food,
Never understanding what they've done,
Never suspecting what's to come.Up their nose or down their throat,
Unable to continue staying afloat,
This is the truth we can't ignore,
Research and help so this happens no more.F A C T S
- Many disposable plastic straws, when they're thrown away, end up in the oceans; not only do they contribute to pollution, but sea turtles think that plastic straws are food and consume them.
- The straws clog their lungs and prevent the turtles from being able to breathe properly. In fact, they are one of the most ingested items by turtles, second only to plastic bags.
- People have even started making reusable, stainless steel straws to ensure that this stops happening...they're doing their part, now you can do yours :)
- Down below are a few organizations dedicated to protecting turtles (+ all sea life) and raising awareness about the dangers of plastic in our oceans. Please take the time to check them out:
