The following morning Caroline and John hadn’t shown for breakfast. “They’re so ungrateful.” Marilyn said.

Jack glared at her. “No they’re not; it’s just strange for them.” Jack said before running upstairs.

He knocked on their bedroom door. “What?” Caroline huffed. Jack timidly opened the door and went in. He sat down beside his daughter. “Okay kids, you have to tell me what’s wrong.”

Caroline hesitated. “Why did you do it Dad?”

“Do what Buttons?”

“Abandon us, fake your own death to live with her. What was wrong with Mum?”

“Caroline you don’t understand.”

She glared at him. “Enlighten us then father.”

“Your mother wasn’t meant to know, I didn’t want to hurt her. I still care for her you know. I just wanted to live in normality.”

“Okay I understand that but why her?”

Jack paused. “I…just it doesn’t matter, Marilyn wants to like you but you’re making it rather difficult.”

“Fine I’ll be nice.”

Jack kissed her head. “Thank you buttons.”

After Caroline had gone downstairs John jumped on his Dad’s knee. “I don’t understand why we have to pretend you’re dead.”

“Well, John people would never leave us alone for the rest of our lives so it’s best just to say we died.”

“But why?”

“Because John if I had walked away from the presidency it would have damaged the Kennedy name.”

John nodded. “Can we get breakfast now?”

“Sure.”

Marilyn was sitting. “Good morning John.”

“Morning.”

Caroline sat opposite playing with the food on her plate. They didn’t know what to say to their new stepmother.
