Call The Midwife One Shot

"And here's your pillow and blanket," you smiled softly.

"Thank you for your kindness," Shelagh said, sitting down on the sofa, moving one of your daughters toys off of the cushion next to her.

"I'm sorry I can't offer you a proper bed, but I doubt you want to bunk with me and my husband nor with the three girls, this is the best I can offer," you apologised.

You had been friends with Shelagh back when you had been at the Nurses Home at the London. The two of you had been best friends there until you both took different paths, her moving onto Nonnantus House and joining the Order of St Raymond Nonnantus, whilst you married one of the surgeons you had met in the hospital and become a housewife. Although you took different callings, you continued to send letters about your lives and had met up a couple of times when you had first gone different ways.

"You have no reason to fret," she smiled. "I wish I did not have to be a burden on you and as soon as I have solved my predicament, I will leave but I just need a couple of nights on your settee and I am beyond grateful for the kindness you offer me."

"It's nice getting to see you again. It honestly has been too long, and I should've put in my effort to see you. You weren't even too far away, we're only one district over from Poplar for the midwives who delivered my three," you said.

She shook her head, taking your hand as you sat down beside her.

"Nonsense. You are now a mother, that is a full-time job, far harder than most other career paths and you do not get paid for it. We both were busy, so I am just glad to see you again. It is a blessing to see you so happy with your husband and three girls. They are all beautiful children."

"It is odd to see you without your wimple. I honestly started to doubt you even still had hair," you joked, gesturing to her light brown hair that fell just below her shoulders.

She let out a soft laugh as you tried your best to remove all of the hidden toys that were hidden amongst the sofa cushions.

"We have both changed but we are still friends Shelagh," you smiled. "And you are welcome to stay as long as you need."

"Thank you Y/N."
