There it was again; those three words that he said two times now. For some reason, when I heard those words from, I felt scared and confused. Was I ready for this again? Was I ready to give up everything for a man? Was I ready to plunge into the unknown with someone? I needed to think first. I needed to contemplate about all this. But with the little time I had, with the company, the arson, the apartment, and my mother in rehab, I couldn’t just drop everything and contemplate about these things, these feelings.
Moments passed as I stared into the eyes of this man, whose sincerity about his feelings just caught me off guard. He looked straight into my eyes, green to blue, as he searched for any answers. My mouth remained opened as I tried to gather my thoughts. I shifted my body so that I leaned on my elbow facing him.
“Luke, I’m sorry. I still don’t know what to say. I haven’t though about this; about what’s going on between us. I feel confused.” I looked down on the duvet that covered us both as we laid there staring at each other.
“It’s still him.”
“What?” My eyes widened with complete confusion.
“It’s still him. It’s still Tristan.”
I was completely dumb founded about what he just said. Was it still he? After all these years, am I still not over with Tristan? He’s been gone for almost six years now. I don’t know! I’m completely at a loss for words.
“To be completely honest, I really don’t know Luke. I’m really confused. For almost six years, I’ve been running from those—“ I waved my hand up in the air as I tried to look for the right words to say to him. “Feelings.”
“I understand. Don’t worry. I’ll keep waiting. I watched and waited for you for years. I’m not about to give up on you. I love you Sydney.” Words failed me once more. “You don’t have to return anything tonight Syd. No pressure. But just know that I’m always here. I’ll never leave you.”
I just smiled at him. “I’m sorry.”
“What for?” Luke was now lying on his back with eyes closed.
“For this.”
“Don’t worry about it. I understand.” He opened his eyes and turned to look at me. He gave me a heartwarming smile that washed away every bit of anxiety in my heart. “Go to sleep. Work again tomorrow.” I smiled at him once more. He shifted to his side once more, gave me a kiss on my cheek and turned once more so he’s facing the ceiling.
After I took a shower the next morning, I immediately walked to the kitchen knowing that I was already late for work. I stayed up all night thinking about Luke. When I settled on the stool, Adam put some pancakes and bacon on the plate in front of me. When I looked around the apartment, Luke was not there.
“Where’s Mr. Graham?”
“He went early to work today ma’am. He told us to tell you that he had an early breakfast meeting.” Adam poured me glass of apple juice.
“Oh. Okay.” I finished my breakfast as fast as I could. I think I finished it in five minutes.
“All set ma’am?”
