I sat inside the car breathing heavily, tears running down my face and my body seemed to be shaking. I tried to wipe away my tears using my hands but new tears kept on falling down. Adam and Alex were already inside the car awaiting my instructions on where to go. I saw that Luke was already running towards the vehicle outside the street. He looked frantic and shaken, his hair all over the place, his shirt disheveled. He was pale and his bright green eyes wide.
He was looking straight at me though I doubt that he saw me staring at him from inside given the heavily tinted windows of the car. I turned my head towards the front of the car and I saw Adam staring at me through the rear view mirror. He looked worried.
“To the apartment ma’am?”
“No. I’d like to go somewhere.” he nodded. I gave him the instructions to the place I wanted to go to. The place where Luke brought me the night before Tristan proposed to me. There was complete silence inside the car for a while before Alex broke the silence between us three.
“Ma’am, I don’t th—“ I interrupted Alex in mid sentence. I knew what he was going to say but I really don’t want to talk about what just happened.
“Stop. I don’t want to hear it.”
“I’m sorry ma’am.” He looked down, feeling ashamed that he went out of line this time. He shifted on his seat slightly and grabbed something from his back pocket. He reached backwards to me in the backseat and offered me his handkerchief just like he did before.
“Thank you.” He gave me a small smile and looked forward once more leaving me to myself.
Nothing has changed. The cliff side was still the same only this time it was dark since I came at night. The wind was chilly outside, blowing lightly. The almost autumn wind gave touched my skin and gave me goose bumps all over my arms and legs.
I finally stopped crying. My eyes were now red and swollen from the crying I did in the car on the way. Adam and Alex leaned on the car, side by side. They were whispering something to each other when I turned my head towards my direction but I did not bother to know what they were talking about. Probably they were whispering about Luke and I and what happened in his apartment. I turned my head towards the cliff and stared into the horizon where it was slightly lit by the moon above us.
I heard Alex speaking to someone on the phone.
“Yes sir. Okay.” He was probably talking to Luke or Sam. I couldn’t care less. Suddenly my phone buzz from my pocket; I looked at the caller ID and saw that it was Luke who was calling me. I decided to ignore his call and put it back in my pocket. My continued to vibrate for a few more moments and it went off. My phone buzzed again and this time it was Sam that was calling me.
“Syd! Where are you?”
“Why?” I sounded cold than I intended.
“I just need to know. Where are you?”
“I’m in New Haven.”
“In Connecticut? What are you doing there?”
“Nothing.”
“Are security with you?”
“Yes. I need to go. Bye.”
“Syd wa—“ I ended the call even before Sam could finish what he was about to say. I stared blankly into space and tears started pouring down from my face once more.
I could not believe what just happened. I knew that he used to be a playboy or he still was. I don’t know. I was his best friend. I knew him for a long time and I couldn’t believe that he could do this to me. After everything that has happened, after I gave up everything I could offer, he did that to me.
