Luckily for us and the other captured troops, their base wasn't far, no more than two days before we arrived. The longer we stayed alive, the better shot we had at getting out. Although, my concerns for Will were growing exponentially. He bled a lot, and from the looks of his wound, it might be getting infected. Without any help he wouldn't last too long.
It's not as if our captors cared though. Once they brought us inside, we were lead into rooms with rows of large cylinder shaped cages. Guards began shoving us inside, and I held tightly onto Will so we wouldn't be separated. Unfortunately, Bucky got pulled away from us and locked in a cage beside us.
Everyone remained silent until the guards left us. I helped Will sit down, and sat beside his up against the bars. I peeled back the torn edges of his shirt, carefully inspecting the hole.
"It's getting worse...." I muttered. "We should have pulled back sooner, this is all my fault."
"No, it's not, Anna." Will said tiredly. "No other Captain would've had the balls to lead us like that."
"Or the stupidity." I said, leaning my head back against the bars.
"He's right." Bucky said. "It was badass."
"It would've been cooler if I hadn't gotten us caught." I reminded them.
"Eh, tomato, tomato." Bucky shrugs.
We fall silent as two guards return. The open a cage a few rows down, pull out one man, and drag him down the corridors and out of sight.
"Hey," Bucky grabs the attention from one of the other soldiers near the one that was taken. "Where are they taking him?"
"Dunno." He huffs. "Just hope they don't take you, son. They don't come back."
"This is their experimentation headquarters..." I realized. "They're performing human experiments."
"Great..." Will sighed.
"There's no one coming for us." I said hopelessly.
⍟
It had been a few hours since our arrival. Nothing happened besides the occasional soldier being taken away. Will had nodded off after a while, I think the infection was taking too much energy from him.
"Any escape ideas?" Bucky asked.
"I was gonna ask you the same thing." I glanced over at him disappointedly.
"We'll figure something out, we always do." He shrugs.
"What if we don't?" I ask. "Will is getting worse, he needs medicine, and- this wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for me."
"Hey..." Bucky said with concern, scooching closer to the edge of the bars. "You and him wouldn't be here if it wasn't for me. You came back for me, and I'd have been dead if you didn't. You don't get all the blame. I was the idiot caught behind the enemies line."
"You were doing your job." I told him.
"And so were you." He insisted. "Even if we don't make it out of here, I'm damn proud to have had you as my Captain."
"Thanks." I muttered after a moment. "Do you think we will? Make it out?"
"I hope we do." He says. He tries to change his expression, to a more positive facade. Almost like we were just talking back home. "But, just in case, anything you wanna unburden your conscious?" He asked jokingly.
"This isn't funny." I said with a faint smile.
"I'm serious, King." He smirked. "What's your deepest darkest secret?"
