Samantha
—————————
I flutter my eyes and there was a bright light that pierced through the curtains. Strange. I thought I would wake up in the MPD, but no. I'm in...North Carolina. 1984. I didn't feel any of my powers anymore. Obviously. This was no dream. I knew it wasn't. Good. I'm glad. I yawned and stretched, then starting to move the blankets that were on top of me. I looked down to my left to find that Wilbert was gone. I then started to get worried for a bit. I sat up quietly, trying not to make as much noise as possible. I looked around his room, then opening the curtains slightly to see a neighborhood with other houses separated to each other and the sun beginning to rise above the clouds. It was pretty. The door opened and I jumped. Fortunately it was Wilbert who came in.
"Morning, Samantha."
"Good morning. Vhat happened?"
"Well I told my parents about you. Technically not the whole story. I just told them that you're new to the area like you moved from another state, like New York."
"New Jork?"
"It's a city north from here. Your family doesn't teach you about the world, do they?"
"Unfortunately, they don't." I lied. I literally have no clue what New York was or any "state" in America.
"Well, my mom wants to meet you. I told her that you're just a good friend and that you and I are having a sleepover."
"Oh. Okay." So I just have to pretend that it is all true. Easy. Simple. Wilbert threw me some of his clothes.
"Here. Wear my clothes. I'll let you change over. I'll be next to the door."
"Alvight." I nodded. Changing over from my white night wear to a white with red stripe shirt and blue pants, and then stepping out of the room. We both walked downstairs and into the kitchen.
"Okay. You know what to do." Wilbert mummers at my ear.
"Vight." I whispered back and we both stepped inside, seeing a woman with big, curly hair and rectangular thin glasses, green outfit and, feeding a baby, presumably, Wilbert's brother.
"Good morning, mom."
"Wilbert, good morning sweetie." She runs up and kisses.
"Mom!" Wilbert wines, trying to inch his way out of his mom's hug. I smiled, while laughing.
"I see you brought over a new friend. Hello, I'm Jennifer. You must be Samantha." She reaches for my hand and I shook her hand.
"Ja, Samantha-" I quickly slowed down not wanting to say "Maxis." Honestly, I didn't establish a last name. So I quickly thought of a last name that wasn't as confusing as Maxis.
"Samantha... Böttcher. Ja. Böttcher is mein lasht name. Shorry. Mein bad. I just shpaced out. Shtill vaking up."
"I see. So I hear your German too. Well welcome to the neighborhood. Come, I'll make some breakfast for the both of you. You want some waffles?"
"Sure."
"Jes please."
"Breakfast will be ready here shortly." She spoke sweetly. I hummed. She seemed nice. Really nice. I looked around and the atmosphere in the room looked warm and vibrant. I haven't seen anything like that before. It was...peaceful. I felt like I belong here. Jennifer. She looks like a great mom. I smiled.
"Hey Samantha. You wanna watch TV?"
"Oh....sure. Okay." At least I knew what a TV was. The TV turned on and we began watching the news, then cartoons and then back to the news. Jennifer brought out the plates to all of us. I split the waffle into small pieces and bit into it. It was great. I took my time eating as much as I can. I don't even recall eating anything. Well now I was starving. I haven't eaten or drink anything since. It's been so long.
"Well, we should head out. We're gonna leave." Wilbert get up from his seat and so did I. We both knew what we were gonna do and so we all head out of the kitchen.
"Alright. You be careful and make sure you new friend gets to see the neighborhood." Jennifer's voice echoed.
"Okay. Come on, Sam." Wilbert calls by my nickname. I nodded.
"Oh and you should borrow my shoes." He whispers looking down at my feet. I was alarmed.
"Oh. Alvight." I spoke, putting white shoes. I don't think I even worn a type of shoes that looked kind of bulky, except for me wearing black flats sometimes, I forgot that I was barefoot the whole time. Wilbert helped me tie the shoelaces and we began heading on out of the house. The neighborhood looked so bright and vibrant just like the house. Looked like my eyes have to adjust to the lightning. I felt like a normal human being with no rage or violence. I began to feel peace and experience happiness and joy.
"So vhere are ve going?" I asked, catching up to him.
"Meeting friends. There at the park. Hopefully." Wilbert replies. We began to walk through the woods and into the park. There were about nine kids at the park standing around. They took notice of us and began to walk towards us.
"Yo Wilbert! Whats up?" One boy asked. I tug on Wilbert's arm with genuine concern.
"Vilbert. Who are zhey?" I asked, worried, but prepared to attack, just in case.
"Don't worry. These are my friends." I leveled down and inched towards the group. They didn't look threatening, so I felt calm.
"Woah, Wilbert, you have a girlfriend?" Another boy asked, looking shocked.
"What no! No way. This is Samantha. She's new to here. Samantha, this is Jessica, Rachel, David, Corey, Steve, Jerome, Simon, Fiona, and Marcus." They all waved and said their heys. I stepped up, nervous.
"Uh...Hi. I'm Samantha." I wave back, nervously.
"You speak German?" Jessica, with black short and straight hair, and black outfit, spoke in utter shock.
"Ja. I do." I responded proudly.
"Holy shit! Guys she's fucking German and she sounds like it." Jessica wheezes the last part. I chuckled.
"That's incredible. I'm Rachel." The blonde girl spoke reaching out a hand. She had a high ponytail and a colorful sweater outfit and a pink skirt. I reach her hand and we shook our hands.
"So you lived in Germany?" Jessica asked, still looking wide eyed.
"Vell...Ja. Ja I did. Vonce I did."
"Oh. What happened?" Rachel spoke.
"Vell. Long shtory short, I had terrible parents and a horrible family, and mein entire childhood was zhe vorst and I'm..." my anger was growing inside and I felt hot tears coming.
"And I'm glad zhat I left zhat hellhole of a place. I don't deserve zhe pain and shuffering I endured. I just...I just vant to live a life of freedom and...I vant to experience zhe joy and happinessh zhat I've never had. Ever." I said hardened, memories came back from my dark past. I wiped a tear. Silence fell upon the group, especially Wilbert who looked bewildered and shocked from what I said. I felt really embarrassed and almost guilty. Then, all of the sudden, out of nowhere, I felt a hug. A gentle, but strong, almost tight grip of a hug from Rachel. She hugged me very tight, burying her face into my shoulder. My eyes widened at the sudden action. Never have I felt a hug like this, since my father hugged me once and for the last time before his death, but this was a first from someone else.
"I'm so, so sorry you had to go though that. It must've been so hard for you to endure such suffering." She whispers. This was the first. No one had ever hugged me or even cared about me or my situation at the least. My eyes watered again and I smiled. This was...perfect. I felt so happy that someone even cared for my pain, even if some of it was a lie, all of the torture that I endured was true. I then looked down at my open hands and I slowly hugged her back, then closing my eyes slowly, feeling the peace that was now taking over and the rage died down. This is what love was. No, not romance love, but love. Just love. Love of someone you care the most even if you barely known them for a second. Love. Wait. How do I know this information? Oh well, It doesn't matter. I had something that I never had before. Love.
"Are you okay, Samantha?" Wilbert looked at me worryingly, hand on my shoulder. I smiled sweetly, while nodded.
"Ja. I'm good. I'm just glad I left." I mummered softly. Rachel slowly backs away, seeing the pain in her eyes. She might have never seen the torture but she knew what it was like. I then asked everyone of something.
"Do jou guys zhink jou can help me shtart a new life here in....Americah?" I said the last part very weird. They all laughed.
"Of course!" Rachel nods and also hearing Fiona and the other two boys Simon and Jerome.
"Sure."
"Hell yeah. In return you help me with German. Because I'm taking German class and I need help." Jessica spoke. I nodded.
"Alvight." I responded in agreement.
"Wait So you literally ran away from home. All the way to here?" Fiona asked, who had cute thick braids that go down her shoulders.
"Ja. Pretty much."
"We should show you around the area, restaurants, fast foods-Oh! And you should come to school with us." Jerome spoke up.
"Ja, but how?" I asked.
"Aren't you adopted yet?" Marcus asked. His hair was dark brown and had a blue jacket.
"Nein." I shook my head.
"So you just up and left?" Simon spoke his hair was sort of like bangs but had an open to his left and his eyes looked tired, like he stayed up all night.
"Yesterday. She left." Wilbert reply.
"Wait you knew?" David questioned. His hair was dark and slicked back.
"Of course I did. I found her lying in the forest and I carried her home." Wilbert replied.
"Wow that's some heroic shit right there." Fiona responded, along with Steve nodding and replying.
"I agree." Steve spoke.
"You must've walked all the way through here. Are you in any pain? Sore?" Jessica questioned. I replied as honest as I can sound.
"Ja. Mainly mein legsh." I rubbed my right leg.
"Wow, your tough." Jessica replied.
"Yeah. I can't even walk more than a mile than you can." Corey spoke up. His hair was gold brown and slicked back, but it looked like there were spikes on certain spots, but it wasn't too spiky.
"Alright, alright. Enough talk. Let's show this newcomer what this place is about and what happens down here." Steve spoke.
"Yeah. Come on." Rachel and Jessica grab both my hands and we all left. I began to feel tingly out of excitement and I felt astonishingly happy. I've just made friends in another dimension, I'm now currently living in the 80s and I have family. Almost, but not quite there yet. But I now know this was going to be the greatest thing that has ever happened to me in my life.
