*_~_*Chapter One*_~_*
Ceralyn's Point of View
A really big chunk of my life was spent as, well, a loner girl. Mostly my elementary years in school, and a bit of junior high. Yep. You could say it started when I kept bringing a briefcase instead of a backpack to kindergarten, or the time when I ate chalk whenever I got bored, or- the list is absolutely ENDLESS. Back to te point. When it all started? Hmm. I'm not exactly sure. However, I would say it really began in the fall of Grade Three. As everyone probably figured out by now, I was the weird girl. With unusual looks. Not bad, not at all, but difinately strange. I, Ceralyn Donnes, had uncommon auburn, pixie-short hair- uncommon perfect nose- uncommon gray, intoxicating eyes- uncommon everything. Sure, I still have almost all those features still, but back when I was highly different, looks didn't matter. My reputation as a third-grader was judged by what I did. Who everyone else took me for. The Loner. Sort of socially awkward or something. I longed for friends. Every day. I kept waiting, until one October day, our class teacher, Miss Evanz, told us someone new was coming here to join our school for the rest of the year. This was my chance. And I took it. With all my might. The second the new girl, Irilie Mandontt stepped into the room I went crazy. Introduced myself, my desk, the empty seat next to mine- that would be where she would eat lunch and play games and do our work, I told her. She didn't seem to mind. A little intimidated, perhaps, but willing enough for me. As time went by, we became friends. Irilie and I talked walking home, during recess, on the phone, at each others' houses.
"I take dance classes." Irilie said. "Hey! I always wanted to dance, too, but my mom enrolled me in music classes instead."
"Oh. Well, if you DID take ballet and jazz, wouldn't it be so cool if we took them together?"
"Or if you took my singing classes with me!" I squealed. We broke out, laughing until we couldn't laugh any more. Irilie and I continued, learning about each others's lives. Hers seemed much more interesting than mine. I decided that she was too nice, too friendly to let her be friends with anyone else. I took over her life.
"Hey! You have tuna sandwich? With orange juice!"
" I bet I can finish my work faster than you!"
" Don't worry, tonight we'll have sleepovers and movies and food and play dolls!"
" Ew, that girl is never going to be my friend. Are YYOOUU gonna be her friend??"
I went on and on. Anything to make it clear to anyone that Irilie was my best friend, and no one was about to take her away from me. Not even Irilie herself.
"Hi, Kimmy! Can you t-" I interrupted her, sneering at Kimmy and Lauren.
" Uhh, Carline, do you mind if I sit with you for lun-" I steered Irilie back to the seat next to mine.
" Thalia, do you have a pet? Because Miss Evanz said-"
"Hey, Irilie! I need to talk to Thalia. Thalia, Irilie is my friend, and you can't do anything about that. So stop trying to be mean to me anymore, or I'll tell the teacher that- ow!" Irilie pulled my hair.
" Ceralyn, I like you and all, but I like Lauren and Thalia, too. You never let me be friends with anyone else, so please, let me just talk to them. Listen, why dobt you try eating other friends, too?"
I started crying. "Don't you see? I dont talk to them because they don't like me!"
"You never tried!"
"LOOK, it's either me, or THEM. It's just because I look different, right?"
"No,no,no, it's not because of that. I can't just have one friend! It's not fair for me. I want to choose both of you guys." Irilie smiled. Lauren did too.
