*_~_* Chapter 4*_~_*
Ceralyn's Point of View
I sighed. I mean, I have to tell someone, so I might as well tell it to my best friend- my only friend.
I took a deep breath and said,"Thanks, Laila. Really. But is it okay if you come over to my house and I tell you there? Please?"
Okay, okay, I chickened out. So what? C'mon, think about it. Can I (should I?) repeat my crisis in the middle of dance class? Please. That's the last thing I want to do- get another bad reputation here at dance, the only place where I actually have friends, and fall behind and let Irilie be better than me at ANOTHER skill. Did I work that hard just for exactly that to happen? I didn't think so.
Laila replied,"Sure!" She looked like he wanted to say something else, but one look from our teacher shut her up. Oh well. I would find out what he wanted to say later, anyway.
*********
"Mom, Laila's coming over, that's okay with you, right?" I crossed my fingers with my free hand, the other one was clutching a telephone.
"Of course, sweetie! What snacks do you two want?"
"She wants to know what we wanna eat!" I whispered loudly to Laila.
Laila whispered back,"How about sandwiches and orange juice?"
"Okay. And I want to have some cookies, too."
"Sure."
I turned back to the phone. "Mom, we want some orange juice, cookies, and sandwiches, please? Pretty please with a cherry on top?"
Mom laughed. "Thats fine, Lynnie! Does Laila want me to drop her back to her house or is her mom going to get her?"
"We can take her back."
"Alrighty, then! See you in fifteen."
Fifteen? Seconds or minutes? Hours or days or weeks?
"Er, Mommy, how long is fifteen..?"
She chuckled again. "Fifteen minutes."
"Oh. Okay. Bye, Mom."
"Bye-bye!"
Laila and I waited until she came. We climbed into my car, plopping down our dance bags next to us. During the drive, Laila and Mom chatted about how Mom's day went. When they exhausted that subject, they moved onto the weather, and then about Laila's school play auditions.
"I'm going to try out!"
"Well, that's nice! Good luck." Mom smiled at Laila's reflection through the rearview mirror.
"Thanks. I'm gonna need it."
Mom turned to me. "Lynnie, don't you have a school play, too?"
"Yeah..." No need to tell her that I wasn't trying out because Irilie was.
"Trying out? I'm sure you'd be splendid if you got in!"
"As a main character? Pfft. I'd do better as a rock in the back."
"But of course not! All we need to do is just pick up the audition sheet and sign up!"
"Moooom. There's singing and dancing! I can't do both!"
"Well, who else can? You're probably the only one who take lessons for both!"
"Nope. Irilie doesn't have to take singing because she's a NATURAL."
Mom sighed. "I hoped we were over this. Everyone is equal, no one is truly better than the other. Sure, we all have different talents, and we may exceed more than others in certain things, but we are all worth the same."
"I know... I guess it's worth a try."
Laila cheered. "Maybe we can practice together!"
Mom said,"That'd be great! What a nice idea!" She then proceeded to drive to my school, went into the office, and came back out with a couple of sheets.
"Into the Woods! Why, I remember this! I watched it when I was your age, girls! This is an amazing production. I can't wait!"
Laila said,"My mom was talking about it one time. She said it's a really good show. Ceralyn, you are soooo lucky to be in it!"
I blushed. "Well, bit yet. But I think I can do it."
"That's my girl," Mom exclaimed. "Laila, do you have your audition sheets too?"
Laila nodded, patting her bag. "Right in here."
Here was my chance, to show everyone that I can do something a lot of people can't. That, finally, Irilie isn't the best like everyone else thought, and that I, of all people, can be the one that everyone will cheer for. Me. A star.
Mom steered right, and slowed down when we arrived in our long cobblestone driveway. I never realized that I was pretty rich, but my parents were nice and liked to donate things and help out with the less fortunate.
We all hurried up the steps, and took off our shoes before opening the entrance door. Now, in my own house, was the start of something big. Something that will affect my whole life. Right here.
