Athena sat in front of her vanity mirror. Silently applying a generous amount of concealer over the dark purple bruises that decorated her cheek and eye.

Although the swelling had gone down significantly from this morning-the discoloration was still there-and proving to make things that much more of a challenge for her.

Staring intensely at her own reflection, Athena wanted nothing more than to pull out her hair. After an hour in the mirror, two layers of foundation, and a seemingly large portion of concealer...she could still see one of the many marks her husband had left behind just last night.

Nearly crying out in frustration, she looked into the mirror trying to figure out what she would do next. If she added another layer of foundation or concealer she would certainly look like a clown...or in the very least some cheap looking whore.

But on the other hand, if she didn't then people would certainly have something to talk about, and give her the side eye all night... and tonight-of all nights-was not the night for questioning.

Because tonight was her husband's annual Black & White Galla Extravaganza that he threw every year to celebrate and commemorate the success of his multi-million dollar company.

And even though she hated going, and loathed being around those perverted men and their bitchy women...she knew her role in life. She was expected to go to all of her husband's events and play the role of a beautiful and supportive yet submissive trophy wife.

DING

The loud and unexpected sound of her cellphone going off made her jump a good inch from off of her chair, nearly sending her toppling to the floor. Grasping the phone in her sweaty palms she saw that it was a text from her husband.

"Speak of the devil, and he shall appear." She mumbled to herself.

*YOU HAVE EXACTLY ONE HOUR TO BE DRESSED, DOWNSTAIRS, AND READY TO GO, OR WE'LL HAVE ANOTHER REPEAT OF LAST NIGHT!

Reading the message to herself she wanted to scoff, or better yet break something.

However, she was very mindful of her actions, seeing as how her husband had the entire house bugged. Meaning anyone could be watching her at this very moment-one of the security guards...or even her husband. Gently setting her phone back down, she took another look at herself in the mirror and let out a tired sigh.

She was not even close to being ready. She hadn't finished her makeup, her hair still had pins in them-hell she wasn't even in her gown yet.

She felt like crying, yet she refused...for two reasons.

One, it would ruin her makeup. And two...she knew that crying got you no where in life, especially in her life, and especially with her husband.

"Might I suggest a smokey eye ma'am?" A gentle voice said from behind her.

Jumping to her feet. Athena quickly spun around on her heels only to see one of the new hired maids standing at the foot of her bed, holding a tray of her daily tea. She watched silently-in a somewhat state of shock-as the young woman poured and proceeded to set a cup of her favorite tea down on her vanity.

It had been years since one of the staff members-aside from her personal bodyguard Titus- had interacted with her. That's not to say that they never have- but after helping her escape they were given the choice to either shun her or have a death threat hang over their lives and the lives of their loved ones.

And although she was hurt-she completely understood when they respectively choose to shun her.

"Oh...perhaps a bit of um...blush-as well." The maid said shyly.
