Five months.

Five long and irritable months is how long Athena had been locked away in the house. Well...five months: two weeks, four days, sixteen hours, twenty-three minutes, and ten seconds to be exact...but who was counting.

Five excruciating months since she had been put on bed rest and confined to an unfamiliar bed, in an unfamiliar room strapped to all sorts of machines.

Five hopeless months of doing nothing-but staring numbly either at a blank wall, or out of a viewless window wishing that her morphine drip took away more than just her physical pain.

Five painful months since her brief encounter with death.

And five soul wrenching months since she last saw her husband.

"Well Athena the swelling has gone down quite nicely," Doctor Amino said observing the now slight bruises around Athena's face and throat," But, I am not happy about your ribs. They are not healing as fast as I hoped they would." He muttered looking down at a picture of the x-rays she took earlier that day.

"There is still a bit of swelling right here along the edges." He said pressing down gently around Athena's upper torso. "So just to be on the safe side I want you to stay on bedrest, and try to relax. I'm going to inform your nurse to continue using a warm and cold compress to help with the pain and swelling." Doctor Amino declared, quickly jotting down his thoughts before flipping through his notes.

"It's been noted that you haven't been complaining of any pain or discomfort for the last few days. Which is really good-so I'm going to take that as a sign and have your nurse remove your morphine drip later on today." He stated not looking up from his clipboard.

"However, because of your condition, I am going to be a tad bit cautious here, and write you a prescription for ibuprofen. Just in case you do start to feel some sort of pain or discomfort whether it be in your upper torso area-near your ribs, um-your head, or your legs, or arms, or wherever...you have something to help." Doctor Amino chimed, writing down the last of his thoughts before sending Athena a quick comforting smile as he packed the remainder of his belongings.

"Our next appointment is in three weeks, and if all goes well, and you take your medication, rest, eat, and get enough sleep. I can do my final examination and hopefully be able to discharge you with a good bill of health." Doctor Amino grinned before turning on his heels and walking out the door without another word.

And as soon as the door closed behind him, leaving Athena alone with her thoughts she did what she usually did these days...and cried.

She cried her little eyes out until they grew red and swollen-until she had no more tears to give.

She cried until her body grew tired and forced itself into a restless state of sleep.

But that never lasted as long before she would be awake from a nightmare and spend the next hour or so staring aimlessly in her dark and empty room for God only knows how long.

And today was no exception to what soon became her new normal routine.

"Knock-knock," came the voice of the only other person who came to see Athena these days besides Doctor Amino, her nurse- Nurse Roxanne.
