A short introductory chapter of Aphe and Athena's relationship.
Her short brown hair glistened under the sun, as she was practicing one of her runs on that particular day. The goddess Athena is a goddess of running, or sports now.
A certain purple haired girl sat at a bench with a shade above her. Aphrodite brought food and water for the beautiful senior whenever she would like to rest and take a breather. Sometimes when Aphe would refuse to see her classmates, the track field was her personal getaway. She recalled her childhood in Athens, aka the historical birthplace of both of them.
This is a girl meets girl flashback.
Athena always kept her hair short at all times.
The boys were still going to check her out regardless of having long hair or not since preschool but she didn't bother. To her, what's important is that she succeeds in her goals. The term boyfriend or girlfriend is hardly relevant in her vocabulary.Aphe remembered their first meeting at a park. She was 6 and Athena was 8. A girl with light brown hair sat alone on a swing, with no friends accompanying her. She keeps everyone at an arm's length, distancing herself since childhood.
"Hey, let's play the swing together." Aphrodite spoke, trying to make a conversation. The brown haired girl looked at her and cocked an eyebrow.
"Hm? Oh well, I suppose I can entertain myself that way." Athena replied nonchalantly.
"Yay! My name's Aphrodite. What's yours?" Aphe asked, smiling.
"I'm Athena. Wow our names do match with one another. I am impressed."
The younger girl grinned in delight upon hearing her comment. Her eye smile caught Athena's attention, her innocence radiating through the magenta eyes of hers are hard to dismiss. Both of them were from different schools before eventually meeting again in the girls boarding school when they grew up a little.
It's as if the red thread of fate would bring them closer to each other even though they kept silent about their secret relationship. The truth was hidden from the public, so that the friendship does not wither away. Aphe would even date other girls. Athena however didn't succumb to temptation of getting to know other people nor dating. Now, since both of them are transferred consecutively to Ouran, a new chapter awaits for these two.
Run. Run. Run.
Run till you forget everything.
Athena was practicing her run when the coach started whistling for a time out. She immediately saw Aphe, who was waving at her from afar. She smiled and walked towards her to get food and mineral water. Soon they had lunch and reminiscing the past with one another.
"This tastes so good. Your cooking skill improved." Athena complimented the food inside the bento box.
"Thank you so much. But I'm still lazy to cook on most days." Aphrodite replied as she ate her own lunch.
"Because cooking is your maid's job." Athena chided playfully.
"I never cook unless if it's for you."
The brown haired girl remembered an incident in middle school where a bunch of girls were fighting, backstabbing and bullying a newcomer. It is not as bad as it looks, but betrayals were normal in middle up to high school. But the senior knew that Aphrodite had gone through so much pain until she started to dissociate and remove bad memories about the school. All she remembers now are the good things in life.
"You should never run back to those who hurt you." Athena advised for some reason, during the present time.
Aphrodite's first instinct was about Kyouya. As much as they love each other, the relationship feels like a thunderstorm. Perhaps Kyouya is the hurricane after all. His love feels more obsessive and other times destructive. Her thoughts circulated around all the things they did together behind close doors. She sensed how other host club members are starting to feel suspicious of her and Kyouya's relationship. What would she do next if they found out, Aphe wouldn't know. She was tied to him by the red thread of fate.
A part of her thinks she was helping him by a huge margin, even if it means to engage in sexual activities. But the goddess loved seeing him being taken care of, physically and emotionally. She remembered the charming smile he gives whenever he's happy. Eventually, Kyouya developed his version of the eye smile as well.
"I don't know yet, senpai. Things are vague." Aphe replied as she felt the older girl's hand reaching for hers.
"Do you love me?" Aphrodite asked nonchalantly.
Athena gave an elegant smile and replied,
"I wouldn't be here if I did not love you."
The purple haired girl closed her eyes and smiled back. In this cruel world where people don't allow or don't seem to be accepting of two girls being in love with other, Aphrodite knew one day, this particular situation will come in her life over and over again. Athena is a rich man's daughter who does business trades with the Ash family too. The childhood friend has never been in a relationship with a guy or girl. She has always been stern and solitary.
They walked towards the school's vast cafeteria and ordered two bubble teas. They were enjoying their drinks until Aphe started to initiate a deeper conversation with the senior. It was akin to the conversations Kyouya and Kaoru exchanged whenever host club hours are over.
"I apologize for exposing you to the club, my dear. I only wish for your happiness. Because I know how erratic your mind can be." Athena spoke.
"It's fine." Aphe replied calmly. "I've talked to Dr Alex, if I remain the same throughout 3 years of high school, no progress with my dissociative disorder, I am allowed to ask him to put me to sleep. Forever."
The air between them became tense. A minute passed by without words. Aphrodite had her eyes downcast, unable to look the senior in her face. She drank more of her boba tea quietly.
"Are you sure about that?" The golden-eyed senior asked.
"As far as I'm concerned, it's better than me having to do it myself. You see, the sadness lasts forever, by Vincent Van Gogh." Aphe quoted.
The senior crossed her arms and frowned, trying to think of a solution. What if Kyouya knew of her circumstances? It was obvious that Aphe wouldn't inform him of her decisions in the first place.
Vincent Willem Van Gogh, a post-impressionist painter had been Aphrodite's favourite. The artist struggled with mental illness throughout his life, was admitted to the asylum several times and eventually shot himself; bleeding to death. Throughout his lifetime, Van Gogh has always been attracted to dangerous and temporary women. Somehow Aphe could relate to all aspects of him except his painting prowess. Kyouya's paintings came to mind all of a sudden. One day she would want to paint the skies with him, under the starry sky. Starry Night - Van Gogh.
Athena closed her eyes and held the other girl's hand in silence. Her mind started to drift off; away from reality. Aphrodite's smile was the only thing that could bring her back to earth. And it did.
They walked hand in hand before Athena took Aphe to a secluded area. She whispered softly, "I know he loves you. Might be for the rest of his life. I've been watching him for a while now. It's not going to be easy, but I believe if you guys work for it, things shall be alright."
The purple haired girl didn't reply. Instead both of the girls shared a spontaneous kiss, without any of the students knowing.
"With this kiss, I have set you free. Find your happiness, my dearest Aphrodite."
