It was a simple mistake; you opened the door and she bolted. Out of the house into the streets, gone before you could catch a glimpse. By she I'm referring to your cat, she's a brown Ocicat and her name is Coffee. First night you adopted her, she knocked over a cup. Anyways after that you put up posters and would go out looking for Coffee in the ungodly hours of the night. You were devastated, she was your first cat and you loved her more than your obsession with coffee. You missed the feeling of her fur rubbing up against your leg at 2 a.m. still writing a paper due the next day.
You prayed that you or even someone would find her. Little did you know somebody did and was taking care of her as well. It had been weeks since she went missing and you were losing hope. You had grown accustomed to having the whole bed to yourself again. It was odd not hearing her purr in the morning when you first wake up, you were convinced that Coffee thinks that you die every time you go to bed. It was after school; you were sitting on your couch scrolling through social media when there was a knock at the door. Surprised, you get up and check through the eyehole. It was a man, with a box in his hand. Cautiously, you open the door and peek out. I mean it's Gotham for Christ sakes.
"May I help you?" You ask.
"Um, yeah. I saw your lost cat pos-" He says before you throw open the door.
"Did you find her?" You ask with a burst of excitement thinking your hairy baby was back home.
"Um yeah, I picked her up a few weeks ago and only saw the poster yesterday. Sorry I couldn't return her sooner." He replies to you, while scooping her out of the box. He hands her to you; you gladly take her. Holding her in your arms you tell Coffee how you missed her and to never do that again.
"Um, well I'll be going now." He says turning around.
"Wait!" You yell out at him. He turns back looking a little confused.
"At least let me give you some sort of reward." You say to him, thinking about what to say and then continue.
"Would you like to come in for some coffee?" You ask motioning to him to come inside.
"Really, I don't want to bother you." He says to you looking bashful.
"It's the least I can do, you did return my child after all." He chuckles at what you say then decides to go inside. You set Coffee down and go to your kitchen.
"By the way, my name's Tim" He says holding out his hand. You take it and shake it.
"(y/n)" You reply.
"Do you prefer coffee or tea? Because I have both" You ask facing the cupboard.
"Coffee please" Tim states. You nod and put on the pot.
"So, where did you find her?" You ask taking a seat on your couch.
"I was walking back to my apartment when I saw her, she was too clean and polite for a stray. She let me pick her up, so I carried her back." Tim says taking a seat next to you.
"What's her name, I've just been calling her kitty." He asks.
"Coffee, I named her Coffee." You say back a little shyly.
"Why?" He replies looking at you.
"Well the very first night I adopted her I had a cup of coffee on the table. She jumped up and knocked it over therefore resulting in her name." You say back recalling on the memory. "Its cute." You hear him say. You get up and walk back into the kitchen. You take the pot and pour the steaming coffee into 2 mugs.
"What do you have in your coffee?" You ask.
"Just black." Tim calls back. You fix your mug and bring them out to the living room. When you walk in you see a sight you would have never expected. Coffee curled up in Tim's lap purring away.
"She really likes you; she doesn't even let my friends touch her." You say smiling as you set his coffee down in front of him.
"Really? She seemed to cling onto me when I first met her." He says.
"Maybe she can sense the good in you." You say taking a seat, he shrugs. You guys sit there talking for a while about the most random things. Coffee seemed content is his lap for the whole time, only ever getting up to re-position herself. But all good things must come to an end, it was getting late and it was time for him to go.
"I had a great time, thanks for inviting me in (y/n)." Tim thanks you.
"Its no problem, you returned my hairy baby so." You say making a quick joke.
"Well I hope you have goodnight." Tim says waving goodbye and leaving.
"Wait, Tim I was wondering if I could have your number. Ya know in case she decides to go on another adventure." You ask him, adrenaline running through your veins. He smiles at you nodding his head.
"Sure, where's your phone." He says, you take it out and enter your password. Going into your contacts and giving it to him. You wait a few seconds before he hands it back to you.
"Well bye for now, when you text me. Tell me its you so I don't think someone random did it." He says before walking off. You watch his figure slowly drift off into the crisp Gotham air. You turn back and close the door. Then look at your phone, you giggle as you see his contact name. 'Coffee's Hero'.
