I Watched the City of Light
I watched the metal box proudly display
the numbers,
ascending.
I watched the panicking faces of my group,
surrounded by strangers in a suffocating box,
ascending.
We tumble out of the box,
gasping for fresh air.
She grabbed my wrist and made a beeline for the door.
“Air,” she gasped, eyes darting around.
“Now.”
We stepped out of the warm building into the gusty night,
the door thudding close
silently
behind us.
I watched the wind tossing the ladies’ hair
and threatening to steal gentlemen’s hats.
We scooted over to the edge,
fighting past throngs of tourists
bundled up in layers and layers and layers.
I watched the flashes of cameras
illuminate the deck.
“Woah! Grace, you have to look at this!”
I stuck my head out of the throng and watched.
Light. Everywhere you looked.
Right, left. Down below. Even up in the sky,
the moon sadly smiling down at us.
“Where are all of my friends,
the stars?” she moans in the wind.
“It’s okay,” the top of the building blazes.
“Every night I’ll shine a different color for you.
Make sure you never get lonely.”
The moon smiled,
surreptitiously letting her mask drop,
letting it fall down to the blazing city.
I watched as the mask fell
down and down and down
past building windows, radio antennae, office doors,
ant pedestrians, bee taxis, wandering homeless,
down and down and down
until it landed,
softly
on the busy pavement.
I watched as each person walked over the mask,
part of it stuck to their shoe
tacking on for a ride.
I watched until there was no more.
The mask spread out across the City,
Each piece softly radiating
moonlight.
“Come on, Grace. We have to go.”
As we went back inside,
I couldn’t help myself
But look back
and watch
The City of Light
glisten.
