calum --

boy, was i wrong. it seemed every breathing organism on the planet had suddenly been replaced by a clone of michael, and his stupid red hair. i saw him everywhere, in the funhouse and on every ride i was hiding behind to avoid him. it was ridiculous, really.

i ran into luke and allison at a concessions stand, buying themselves a couple of pretzels and lemonades. i tapped him on the shoulder, looking up at his shocked face.

"hey, you okay?" he asked, furrowing his eyebrows. i debated my answer, breathlessly staring at him for a seconds before nodding and inhaling deeply to catch my breath. "cool. you want something?"

he started to pull out his wallet again as i read the menu, chewing on my bottom lip in concentration. just as i turned to tell luke what i wanted, i was faced with two certain red-heads talking to my blonde best friend, one of whom smiled at me when he saw me.

"calum, mate! where did you disappear to earlier?" he confronted me, one of his eyebrows raising in curiosity.

i bit my lip again, looking anywhere but michael's seductive-without-trying celery green eyes, my mind racing with excuses. "bathroom," i signed to luke, who in turn informed the douchebag i had a crush on.

"oh, okay then." he turned to his date, talking to her for a moment before asking luke something, which he then consulted allison about. now not only was i a co-third wheel with ashton, we were fifth wheels. i sighed.

luke signed to me, "we're all gonna eat at the pizza place down the street. sound good?" i nodded.

allison pulled out her phone, flashing me a quick smile before succumbing to conversation with whoever she had called. then she hung up, nodded to all of the hearing people around me, and walked off with my best friend's hand in hers.

michael and whores-her-face (whoops) also walked away hand in hand, following luke and allison. i trailed behind them all, head hung low as if i were a scolded child.

at some point during the walk, ashton had joined us, accompanying me in the caboose of the couple train. i didn't look at him, rather at my thumbs circling around each other idly.

i jumped when the shorter boy shoved his body into mine, obviously without aggression but still making me tense with fear. i gave him a confused look.

"we are almost to the car. okay?" he said, speaking so slowly i'd basically forgotten the first word by the time he spoke the next one. i was appreciative, and offended. i just nodded, like i usually do, and offered a tiny smile. he grinned back.

soon enough we were all piling into luke's old car. i guess we'd be coming back to drop michael and his date off- but in all honesty i didn't see the point of driving when the restaurant was apparently just down the street.

since i was substantially shorter than khloe, i had to sit in the front, between the other disgustingly adorable couple. at least i was cockblocking someone; the last thing i wanted was more pda around me.

the sun had started to set when we pulled off, turning the sky a flaming orange, riddled with pinks and diminishing blues. i could hardly see over the rear-view mirror but from what i could see, this was a definite kodak moment.

with luke driving at the slowest speed possible and traffic from the fair, it took fifteen minutes to drive up the block. i didn't say anything, but my thoughts were mostly: why the hell didn't we just walk?

i thanked god for making me deaf in this moment, since through the rear-view mirror i glimpsed michael whispering something to khloe, and khloe giggling like an idiot. i looked down at my hands again, suddenly feeling really lonely in a car full of people.

luke nudged me with his shoulder, the surprise sending me into allison. i gave her an apologetic look but she was laughing, so i smiled. we hadn't gotten off to the best start, but i could see allie and i being good friends one day.

luke pulled us into a parking space on the street, and one by one everyone piled out. khloe and i were the last ones, and i was about to leave when she tapped my shoulder.

she yelled something out to the guys outside before the doors slammed and suddenly i was alone with my worst enemy.

"listen, deaf or whatever your name is," she started, making me narrow my eyebrows in confusion, "michael is my boyfriend. you're just a gay ass deaf kid. stay away, got it?"

she was talking so fast i was surprised i could keep up. then she flashed a smile and left the car, ultimately leaving a shocked calum by himself.

what the fuck?
