The one with the prank

November passed by pretty quickly and before we knew it shops were beginning to blast christmas music and christmas tree's began appearing in peoples front rooms.

I was beginning to spend more and more time over at Bacon's so when he suggested I brought some of my stuff over and stayed the week I jumped at the opportunity. We had been dating for a month and a half now and our relationship was beginning to develop.

I'd also bonded a lot more with the boys down at the tower, which was good in the way that I had more people to talk to than, the girls and Bacon but also bad in the way that I was susceptible to pranks, like this one.

The tower was practically empty when I arrived at 6 save from Azza on watch duty and Nicola checking that the medical kits were all stocked up. Today I was to be based down at backpackers with Whippet. Seeing as though the summer season is filmed for Bondi Rescue I was also playing taxi to the 2 crew members who were filming the rip today. I quickly dropped of my things in the tower and rushed down the stairs to sort out a Rhino. Kerrbox and the camera crew were already there filming an interview so I gave them a quick wave and headed further in. The Rhinos were all parked in a line so I quickly plonked myself down into the seat of the first one and tried to start the engine. It spluttered for about 10 seconds and then gave out. I groaned and tried again. This time it didn't even splutter.

The cameras were all focused on me now as I tried to start it up and Kerrbox was looking at me with a very disappointed look on his face. "Tessa." He said sternly, "What have you done?"

I grimaced. "I don't know!" I squeaked. "I mean I haven't done anything it just will not turn on!"

"Well you must have done something," he said with raised eyebrows. "It was fine when I put it away last night."

After about another 10 minutes of trying I gave up and slumped over the steering wheel. "I give up!" I cried. "I've broken it! I'm so clumsy, How am I supposed to tell Hoppo?!"

Kerrbox grimaced sympathetically at me as I slunk out followed by one of the cameras. I made my way up the steps towards Hoppo's office in the Pavillion planning my speech. My speech that went completely out of the window when I got there.

I opened to door to his office and all that came out was, "I'm so sorry, seriously I am I have no idea how it happened apparently it was all fine last night but now it won't turn on and ohmygosh i'm so so sorry."

Hoppo looked at me like I had to heads. "What the hell?" He asked. "Start again."

"The Rhino... I've broken it."

Hoppo groaned and stood up from his seat. "Come on we'll go take a look."

We walked in silence back down to the tower and I could hear the sound of an engine down by the rhinos. As we arrived I could see Maxi, Jesse and Hutz all sat on the bonnet of the "broken" rhino with the engine running fine.

"What?" I screeched as I saw them. "How the hell?"

They grinned. "You know you didn't have to bring Hoppo down here to show him how amazing we are Tessa." Maxi said with a smug smile on his face.

I narrowed my eyes at them. "What the hell did you do it?" I asked or screamed, that can change depending on who you ask.

"You know," Jesse started, "The rhino starts better if it has the battery in it."

The guys laughed as I shoved him off the bonnet but stopped as soon as I turned to them. "It was Jesse's idea we promise!" They screeched pointing at Jesse who was now sprawled out across the floor frowning.

"I hate you all." I said jokingly as I walked out onto the sand.

The morning passed quickly with minimal rescues including an group of irish tourists and a canadian family. Unfortunately it didn't last long. December is the perfect time to venture to Australia for a gap year, and Bondi becomes a central hub of students buzzing and partying about. Most students get away with the partying with only a few minor injuries, but some are not always so lucky.

We'd been down at backpackers for about 3 hours before anything exciting happened. I'd been sat in the now working rhino keeping an eye on a group of girls near the water’s edge when someone started waving from further down the beach. My radio cracked at the same time. "Tessa, can you check out what’s happening about 50 meters to your left?"

I hopped out and began running towards the growing group of people before I realised what was going on. The group was right on the shoreline and the waves rushing up onto the sand were gently lapping the arm of an unconscious body.

My heart began to race as I fumbled for my radio, almost dropping it in my haste to get the word out and get to the patient.
"Guys!" I yelled into my radio, "I have an unconscious suspected spinal about 50 meters from the rhino at backpackers."
As I got to the patient I realised it was worse than I had anticipated, looking at the man's still chest I cursed to myself. "We're gonna need a defib as well." I called into the radio as I threw myself onto my knees next to the man. His eyes were closed as I locked my hands together and began to pump. Down. Down. Down. Down. Over and over again. Time seemed to slow down and what seemed like forever had passed before Bacon and Gonzo arrived. They passed the defib to Whippet who had arrived earlier and he began to start up the machine as Bacon and Gonzo tried to hold back the crowd.

"Tessa you have to move, the pads need to be in position," I heard Whippet say as he tugged gently at my shoulder, I leant back on my knees and Whippet moved into position to place the pads on the man's chest.

The machine beeped, and sent a shock through the man's chest. Nothing happened, the man stayed still, not breathing, not blinking. Whippet cursed and waited for the machine to beep again. Two more shocks were sent through the man before Whippet began removing the pads, I sat staring at the body, not fully undestanding what had happened.

"Tell Hoppo" Whippet told someone behind him, as he began to pack up the defib, "We need someone down here to remove the body."

I snapped, "No!" I cried and began to place my hands back over the man's chest, pumping down, down ,down. Willing through my tears for his heart to start beating again. I could hear people talking behindd me but payed them no attention. I had to make this man breathe again. I had to save him.

I pumped and pumped untill I had to be removed. Bacon held me tight as the medics moved the body up the beach, and Whippet sent the camera men away. Tears streamed down my face and I clutched to Bacon's chest as tight as I could. I had let someone down. That man had relied on me to keep him safe and I had failed him. I'd let him die.
