The one with my first day at work

Bacons predictions were right. My first day on the job was hot and busy. And I mean really hot. People swarmed down onto the beach to cool off in the water and people of all different walks of life were stretched out along the sand and water. Ignoring the warnings signs and flag they rushed straight into the water and into trouble. I was placed down at backpackers rip with Maxi who decided it was a great day to sing "Girls just wanna have fun" all day.

We'd been down at the waters edge for about quarter of an hour with Maxi on the megaphone telling people constantly to move over between the flags, when I noticed a boy waving out the back behind the breaking waves. I ripped of my shirt, grabbed my board and raced into the water. By the time I had paddled out a local surfer had spotted the boy and was holding him afloat on his board. I hurried over to them, thanking the surfer as I transferred the young boy onto my board.

When we reached the shore the boy staggered around until Maxi got him to sit on the sand. Maxi tried to ask him if he was okay but the boy just cried. I realised the boy wasn't an english speaker so waved Maxi away and crouched down on the sand next to him.

"Hola?" I asked, but the boy just ignored me, still bawling his eyes out. I attempted French, "Bonjour? parlez-vous français? Do you speak french?"

The boy looked up and nodded. "l'eau a un goût étrange"

Maxi looked at me confused when I laughed, I smiled and had to translate, "He means the water tastes funny." To the boy I asked "combien avez-vous avaler?" The boy gestured a large amount with his hands, I turned to Maxi, "He swallowed a lot of water I think we should call an ambo."

As Maxi radioed Mouse and Yatesy in the tower and told them to phone for an ambo I explained to the boy and his parent who had now found us what was going to happen and gave them a lecture on surf safety. Leaving Maxi to fend for himself for a while I walked the family to the tower, they had been in Australia for 2 weeks but they had only landed in Sydney yesterday and this was their first time on Bondi. The boy could swim but was not a strong enough swimmer to be out in the sea by himself, especially not in a rip as dangerous as backpackers.

When we got to the tower I ushered them inside and sat the little boy down on the medical bed. His breathing was beginning to get laboured so I gave him an oxygen mask. I felt someone come up behind me and I turned to see Reidy packing up his things to go.

"Leaving already?" I asked him grinning.

"Yeah, I had the early shift. I'm gonna go meet Aimee at the coffee shop, her model is being a diva, bring everyone back some coffee them we're gonna take Mugsy and Kita for a quick walk"

"Have fun" I shouted as he closed the door.

The boys breathing began to get better then, but I left the oxygen mask on until the ambo arrived just in case. When the ambo did arrive I said goodbye to the family, and headed back down towards Maxi.

As I got to the bottom of the steps a girl around 16 approached me looking like she'd been crying. "Are you okay sweetie?" I asked her feeling slightly concerned.

"I lost him!" She cried, "he's gone I can't find him anywhere!"

"Find who?"

"I'm a babysitter, he's only two, ohmygosh what if something has happened to him?" She started to panic.

"It's okay" I said trying to calm her down, "we'll find him, what was he wearing?"

"He had a captain america t-shirt on and black boardies and a red sunhat."

"And what's his name?" I asked.

Just before she could answer Mouse popped his head out of the tower. "Lucy? What are you doing here?" Lucy turned around, her face sinking. Mouse frowned, "Where's Alfie?"

I realised then why Lucy looked so upset to see Mouse. She broke down right there on the sand. "I'm so sorry" She cried. "He was there one minute and not the next!"

I attempted to comfort Lucy by giving her a hug. "Where on the beach were you?" She pointed limply towards the north end and I could hear Mouse radioing Whippet and Taco to and telling them to look.

Lucy was too hysterical to be of any help by this point, so I took her up to the tower. Deano who had a day off today was also down on the beach looking as Yatesy and Mouse scoured the sea and sand looking for Alfie.

Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse.

"Helloooo" I heard Aimee's voice come through the back door, "Mister cameraman please get out of the way I have hot coffee I don't want to spill on you."

Mouse turned around quickly eyes filled with panic and he waved to Reidy who was behind Aimee to get her out of here quickly. Confused Reidy took the coffees out of Aimee's hands, put them down on the counter and turned Aimee back towards the door.

"You know Aim, they look quite busy in here today and the guys are filming so lets just leave them to it" He suggested but Aimee had spotted Lucy.

"Lucy?" Aimee asked confused, "What are you doing here?" Lucy burst into tears again and Aimee began to panic. "Where is Alfie? Whats the matter? Can somebody please tell me whats happening here?"

I swapped places with Mouse as he crouched down beside Aimee who had sunk to the floor crying that she couldn't lose another one. Reidy was crouched down at her side as well trying to get her to breath normally.

The radio crackled and Maxi's voice came through, "Just had a report of a little boy out between the flags, I'm going in."

Aimee leaped to her feet and flew towards the balcony, Mouse not far behind. The whole tower watched as Maxi launched himself into the water towards a small figure out the back of the yellow and red flags. He was just pulling the little boy onto his board when the radio crackled again and Whippets voice appeared.

"Guys, its okay, I have him, he's fine. I'm bringing him over now."

By the time the message was finished Aimee was halfway across the beach sprinting towards the rhino coming towards us.

The rhino stopped and she launched herself towards Alfie hugging him tightly. I smiled, glad that Alfie had been found, and wondering if that is what Aimee's love is for a child that isn't even hers, how could my mother cope with doing what she did to me?

A/N okay I'm not really sure about this chapter, but next chapter will be more Tessa centred and we will find out how her date with Bacon goes and what her Mother did to her! Any ideas?? Thank you all for reading! :) xxx
