Chapter Thirteen: The Feast

Piper sighed. The past few days had been a roller coaster, and things were definitely not looking up.

After Piper had climbed down from her tree, she'd found Jason wounded and half-dead by the river. After a few minutes she'd managed to stop the bleeding, but his wound was not looking good.

"Piper!" Jason called out. "I finished washing, you can look now!"

"Jason shush!" Piper scolded. "Do you want Luke and Clarisse to hear you?"

Jason shrugged. "You could hold them off."

Piper rolled her eyes, but she smiled.

After many attempts and a lot of falling over, she finally got Jason into a cave where they could hide.

"We need medicine," Piper muttered.

"Well," Jason said, "unless you happen to have a very rich sponsor, I don't think we're getting any."

"I don't think you understand," Piper said. "If you don't get the proper medicine by tomorrow night, you're going to die."

Jason was silent as the information sank in. He was about to speak when Caesar's voice cut him off.

"Ladies and Gentleman," Caesar said, "I'm here to invite you to a feast."

Piper snorted. There was no way she was getting lured to a feast just so that the Capitol could have entertainment.

"Now, before you reject my offer," Caesar said, as if he could read her mind, "consider this- at the feast will be something each of you needs. If you go, there is a chance you can get it."

Piper glanced at Jason's leg. They needed medicine, or Jason would die. Piper was not about to let that happen. That had to be what would be at the feast- there was nothing else that they would need so desperately that they would risk their lives.

Piper was standing up to go when Jason grabbed her wrist. "Don't," he said softly.

Piper tugged her arm away, then grabbed her knife and hit Jason over the head with the blunt end of the handle. Just enough pressure to knock him out until she got back.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

And then she was gone.

The Cornucopia glinted in the predawn light, the sunlight spilling over the packs placed at its feet.

Two big green ones were there, one with a 2 on it, the other 11. A medium one had the number 5, and a small orange one had 12.

Suddenly, a mane of red hair dashed towards the Cornucopia. As quick as thought, Nancy Bobofit grabbed the backpack marked with 5 and dashed off towards the trees.

She wasn't quick enough.

With one speedy movement, Luke reached out and grabbed her around the neck. Piper watched, horrified, as her head tilted to the side with a sickening crunch.

Piper dashed forward next. Her bag was so small, anyone could grab it.

Just as she'd secured the pack around her wrist, someone tackled her from behind and pinned her down. Piper writhed and managed to flip herself over so she was lying on her back instead of her stomach. Her eyes immediately met those of a grinning Clarisse La Rue.

"I told Luke that if I got to kill you, I would make it slow," Clarisse said. She pulled out a dagger from her belt and ran it along Piper's cheek, drawing blood. Piper clenched her teeth and tried not to scream.

Next she ran the knife just above her right eyebrow. This cut was deeper, and sent blood trickling down Piper's face. Piper whimpered in pain, but when Clarisse moved again, she darted forward and tried to bite her hand.

Clarisse grabbed Piper's hair and used it to keep her head pinned against the ground. Piper hissed in pain, her eyes darting from side to the other as she tried to think of an escape plan.

"Why don't we start with the lips?" Clarisse purred.

Clarisse pressed her knife against Piper's mouth, but before she could draw blood, she was lifted into the air.

Piper looked up to see Travis standing over her. But his attention was focused on Clarisse, who was thrashing wildly is his grip.

"Put me down!" She roared. Travis obliged, throwing her onto the ground beside Piper.

Clarisse scrambled to her feet and reached for her sword, which was lying a few feet away. But before she could reach it, Travis smashed a stone into her skull.

Piper felt woozy. Her head was dripping blood and her limbs felt like lead. But somehow she managed to stand and run towards the woods, pausing once she reached the tree line. She looked back once to see Clarisse on the ground, Luke and Travis sword fighting behind her.

Luke glanced at her, snarling, and Piper sprinted away.

She finally reached the cave, panting, blood dripping down her face. The world was spinning and she could barely walk.

She dropped to her knees beside Jason, who was still passed out. She fumbled for the pack, and pulled it open to see a small bottle filled with a clear liquid and an empty syringe.

Piper pulled the bottle open and filled the syringe before jabbing it into Jason's leg, right into the cut. Jason writhed and moaned in his sleep, but he didn't wake up. Already the wound was starting to look better.

Piper collapsed beside him, her eyes drooping as the world grew fuzzy and grey.

Then everything went black.

Authors Note:
The only characters alive are Jason, Piper, and Luke, so there's really no need for a list.
