I'm so sorry for the long wait! But hey, in my defense this is a super long one shot. (4,855 words total= 17 pages) So this will be split up into 2 parts. While reading this keep in mind it's an AU (alternative universe) ♡
~Enjoy~
Sophie's mind was racing. Her stomach was twisting and turning with knots of emotion. She knew for a fact that she wasn't going to be able to eat this morning. This morning. First day of 7th grade. New school. New people. This could be good, right?
She'd been home schooled since kindergarten and loved it. She got to help out her adoptive parents, Grady and Edaline, at the animal rescue center whenever she pleased. She also had time for multiple extra curricular activities, including horseback riding, dance—which she failed miserably at due to her lack of balance and grace—and karate. All of which she had to stop because she would no longer have that much free time. And to be honest, she didn't really like any of them, only helping out at the animal rescue.
"Are you excited for your first day?" Edaline asked, the sizzling filling Sophie's ears as the aroma of bacon drifted through the air. On second thought, maybe she could eat something. Just because it was one of her favorites.
"Kinda. I'm more nervous than excited," Sophie said, pulling the plate of bacon closer to her as Edaline set it down on the marble swirled island in the middle of their kitchen.
"You'll be fine, I promise. You'll make friends and new memories that you'll favor forever. Now come on, you can't miss the bus on the first day," Sophie's mom assured with a bright smile that was very contagious.
Sophie hopped off the bar-stool and skipped over to the door where she grabbed her black and white polka-dot backpack. She swung it over her shoulder and followed her mother out the door to the car.
"Usually you'll walk to the bus stop, but since it's the first day, I'll drive you. Make sure to remember the drive so you know where to go tomorrow," Edaline said cheerfully. She noticed Sophie tugging out an eyelash, so she added, "It'll be fun, okay?"
"Kay." Sophie mumbled, though she had to hold back a snort. As if.
The rest of the car ride was silent. When they pulled up to the bus stop Sophie grabbed her backpack and opened the car door. "Have a great day."
"Thanks, Mom," Sophie replied with a fake smile. She closed the car door and walked over to the bus stop where a few other kids were waiting. She kept her head down and eyes trailed on the ground, not feeling quite ready to make eye contact with any of her fellow classmates.
Another pair of sneakers came into view and before she could stop herself, she ran straight into the figure.
Great, not even on school grounds yet and I'm making a fool of myself, Sophie thought to herself.
"No worries, we can be fools together."
Sophie looked up and was met with a boy her age with shaggy strawberry blonde hair and periwinkle eyes. He was cute, though not the type Sophie would have a crush on.
Wait a minute, why was she thinking about that stuff? She was only twelve, and since when was she one of those silly, boy-crazy girls?
"Did I say that out loud?" Sophie asked with pure embarrassment sprayed across her face. She kept glancing around, not daring to meet eye contact with the boy, or anyone else, for that matter.
"Yeah. My name's Dex," he said with a sort of half-wave since his fingers were still holding onto his backpack straps.
"I'm Sophie," she replied, finally making eye contact with him. That was some crazy light blue. "So, what grade are you in?" she asked, trying to make small talk.
