I crumbled the letter back up into a shriveled ball and threw it on the ground. I grabbed his face in between my hands. We were simply gazing into each other's eyes but it felt like we were doing so much more. "Nothing is going to happen to me." I told him as my eyes never left his.
He put his hands over my own and nodded his head. "You're right, because I'm not going to let anything happen to you." I let go of his face and pulled his body closer to mine. Without a thought he wrapped his arms around me and put his face in the crook of my neck. I slightly felt him peck the space between my collar bone and neck where my mark would be, I thought I had imagined it. But If I didn't I wouldn't have felt the little warmth that the sparks had left behind.
"What is it? What is it that you're trying to protect me from?" I whispered to him. He quickly let go of me but still held onto my upper arms. "Why did Olivia get like that when she discovered they were coming?" He didn't want to answer me. He looked conflicted, his eyes left mine and drifted down to the wooden floor. "Why don't you talk to me? You ignore me for half the day most of the days! I understand that you have responsibilities to this pack and that so do I but you also have me. How are we supposed to develop our relationship if you won't talk to me?" My heart was racing as my emotions were setting in I was upset And angry. He let go of me, I hate to admit that I missed the warmth of his skin and I craved the sparks that radiate from our skin when we touch.
He stayed silent having a mental debate. His eyes finally met mine again. "Come." His voice was stern and held no emotion. He practically stormed out of his office. I stood still on my spot until he was out the door processing everything until I found it in me to follow him. I had barely made it to the door and he was already mid hallway. I wanted to shout out for him to wait but I couldn't. I picked up my pace but not even then I could I reach up to him. We were out of the right wing of the house and into the middle. Pack members were standing around talking amongst themselves they soon grew quite once they sensed our presence. They each turned to face us and bowed in respect, Angello kept his eyes forward not acknowledging them. I on the other hand smiled and nodded towards their direction. We were in a part of the house that I had yet to visit. He opened a single white wooden door to a room that served as a children's play room. I could only assume by how the floor had a styrofoam colorful rainbow mat covering each inch of the room, the loitering toys, children's blanket, small chairs, a play house and playing tables. I was about to ask him what we were doing in a play room when he walked to the far back of the room causing me to follow him. He broke pieces of the mat off and revealed a hidden door. He pulled it up easily and jumped in he stood just under and pulled his arms forward motioning me to jump... I did otherwise. I used the like built in steps on the side to go down. He brought his arms down and shoved them into his pocket and began walking toward the left of the tunnels. "These tunnels were built as secret passageways for emergencies resulting in evacuation or to serve as a hideout. These tunnels run through all of the territory. There's only three main exits; excluding the ones from the house, there's one in the north, south and east side of the borders. There is another one through the west border but we keep it locked up because it's closer to rogue territory. Do you have any questions or comments so far?" He asked as he stopped walking and turned to face me. I shook my head and he continued his journey.
We stopped right in front of an old musty cement wall. "Here is where Alonzo saved my life. He was a ten year old boy who saw the son and daughter of his Alpha and Luna being cornered in by an attacker seconds from being killed when he picked up a sword from the floor and came running not knowing exactly what he was doing. The only thing Alonzo knew was that he needed to save me and he did." He spoke very proud of Alonzo and his actions and that warmed my heart. It upsets me that they each had to go through gruesome events at such a young age. I moved forward so that I could place my hand on his shoulder just as my hand was about to lay on it he jerked forward and continued walking. I felt my face warm up in humiliation and pang in my heart. I slowly trailed behind him. "This is where I first heard my father shout in agony as they killed him." His voice was laced with hurt and anger. He continued his journey walking to the right of the runner. "This is where I heard my mother beg for mercy. Where I heard her scream and cry. They asked for mine and Olivia's whereabouts but she refused to give it to them so it resulted in her death." I was trying hard to hold back my tears but a treacherous one escaped landing on my upper lip.
"I didn't tell you not because I don't trust you or because I don't want you to know. I didn't tell you because it pains me to talk about them. It pains me to relive that day." My heart ached for him. I hated myself for pushing information out him and practically forcing him to talk to me. I hadn't even thought of him or his feeling. I was just so eager to know. A tear had turned into two and then three. I was about to apologize to him and beg for his forgiveness but he cut me off.
"At first I didn't know what they were. They're not like us and they're not humans. I didn't even know there were any still alive. Hundreds of years ago our kind helped my ancestors wipe out their kind for the life of my ancestors children. But these things blended in with the humans some of them were missed. They were unheard of for centuries until a couple years ago. Do you know how we have our Moon Goddess, humans have their god/s, well these things have a prophecy to believe and worship. A prophecy that was allegedly built around my families bloodline. My bloodline was the first that the Goddess created. These things believe in a silly Prophecy, 'The first She of the Shes first leader will save thee but only if she is birthed three past while the Luna is full. Her blood must be consumed before nightfall of her first birthday in order for the race to keep on breathing.' The Alpha And Luna's first female born, born at 12:03 A.M. on the night of a full moon was Olivia. These things thought she was the savior to their kind So they invaded us. Their invasion cost us the lives of many of our pack members. Once Olivia turned one we were clear from them until now. Now they're desperate. Their kind is dying, going extinct. They think that their only answer to surviving is through the first daughter of an Alpha that is born at 12:03 A.M. on the night of a full moon." He not once turned to look at me his back was faced towards me as he looked blankly at a concrete wall.
I walked closer to him and turned him around. This time he didn't reject my touch. His face was covered with fear and wonder. "If Olivia is safe now why are you so worried?" I patted over his forehead with my thumb to decrease the wrinkles he had formed. He relaxed at my gesture and surely his wrinkles had vanished.
"Because they want you to forcefully birth my child, my first daughter at that specific time during that specific night of the moon cycle." His arm had unknowingly wondered to the back of my knock his thumb was caressing the lower back of my head. I wanted to forget everything and just be here with him but I couldn't.
I wanted not to be scared. I wanted to show him that I was strong and that I didn't fear them but I couldn't because I did. "We won't let that happen." I assured him. He pulled me closer to him I instantly wrapped my arms arms around his torso. We stayed like that for a while until I broke it up and told him "Let's get out of here." In which he agreed. During our way out as we were holding onto each other's pinkies I asked him a question I've been dying to ask.
"What are they?"
To which he responded, "They go by many names. They're most commonly known as..." he took a long pause before responding. I don't know who's heart was beating faster mine or his.
"Witches."
