"There are no secrets that time does not reveal."
- Jean Racine
"Word spread because word will spread. Stories and secrets fight, stories win, shed new secrets, which new stories fight, and on."
- China Miéville, Embassytown
"If you let people's perception of you dictate your behavior, you will never grow as a person."
- George Feeny
"You do your thing, I do mine. You are you, and I am I. And in the end if we end up together, it's beautiful."
- Topanga Lawrence
The pressures of the high school hierarchy can be stressful for any freshman, and sometimes that transition from middle school to high school can shift the dynamics within a friend group. Only the strongest friendships can survive the reality of the clique system.
Maya and Lucas didn't exactly withstand the test. While Lucas quickly climbed his way to the top of the social ladder, Maya stayed in limbo until a rumor freshman year knocked her completely off the social scene. Not wanting to give up his friendship with Maya or his newfound popularity, the two decided to keep their friendship a secret from everyone throughout the rest of high school.
They thought they had everything under control until a drunken night of intense PDA threatens their secret. That's when things start to get a tad bit complicated.
Maya Hart - 17
A girl who is always willing to give up what she wants for the sake of someone else's happiness. With the long-standing reputation of being both the party girl and the bad girl, Maya doesn't really self identify with either label. That's not going to stop the rumors from buzzing through the hallways. She just wants things to go back to normal.
Lucas Friar - 17
Mr. Perfect, Mr. High School. Lucas doesn't like to disappoint anyone, and he will go to the ends of the Earth to spare someone's feelings even if it goes against his own best interest. However, he isn't afraid of doing whatever he wants when it comes to girls, he just doesn't know which girl to choose.
A/N: I first started writing this book when I was 17, right before my senior year of HS in 2016. It is now 2019, I'm 20, and I'm going into my junior year of university, and I am determined to complete at least one story in my life (I've been writing fan fiction since I was maybe 11 or 12, and have NEVER finished one). That being said, as I've been getting older as I create this story, the content and themes have matured as I have. As you read this I want you all as readers to remember that this story is very loosely based on the original content of GMW (I have had a few complaints regarding the character development in the book vs. the show). The characters in this book are experiencing life as if they were teenagers on the CW, not as middle school students on Disney Channel, and that is very important to keep in mind as you read this. Thank you all, and remember to vote, and leave comments to let me know what you think. (:
