"Doesn't seem like the kind of night to be stargazing."

Virgil stepped away from the balcony's edge and dropped his head, falling into the traditionally respectful stance. "Good evening, Your Highness. Shouldn't you be inside?"

He glanced at the prince as Logan walked to the balcony next to him, resting his elbows on the railing and looking out at the cloudy night.

"I've been speaking with guests for nearly an hour. I think I am allowed a brief rest."

Virgil allowed himself a tiny smile, though he kept his head down. "Have you danced with anyone?"

"Bah. Dancing." The prince shook his head. "I've never been good at it."

"Well that's a blatant lie."

Prince Logan turned to look at him, a small smile playing across his lips. "I suppose I must amend that statement. I do not usually partake in it."

Virgil let his lips twitch up, walking over to lean against the railing again.

"How will the king feel about your refusal to court at a ball he threw in your honor of your coming of age?"

Logan squared his shoulders, tapping his fingertips on the railing. "Father knows I dislike large groups of people. He will understand that I'm simply taking a break."

"There's a big difference between taking a break away from the crowd and joining a servant boy on a secluded balcony." Virgil shot back, running a hand through his hair.

Logan raised his eyebrows. "He doesn't need to know why I came up here. He thinks I'm his perfect, studious son."

The band in the ballroom behind them finished a song, then began a new one. When Virgil glanced at the prince, his eyes were sparkling a little.

"You know I hate that look..."

"Dance with me." Logan stood up straight and held his hand out.

Virgil stared at him.

"You've got to be kidding me."

"Clearly I am not."

Virgil crossed his arms. "No. No way."

"Come now, Virgil." Logan flicked his fingertips inward a little. "Humor me."

The servant boy regarded his sovereign for a few moments, then sighed heavily and placed his hand in Logan's.

"You always get what you want, don't you?"

Logan smiled fully, a rare occurrence. Virgil pulled him close, switching their grip and putting an arm around the prince's waist.

"We can't do this forever Logan." He said quietly as they swayed with the music. Logan rested his free hand on one of Virgil's shoulders, his head leaned against the taller man's collar.

"Don't remind me. Every day Father pushes more, wanting me to court a noblewoman twice my age or reach out to a country we need a treaty with. He'll have my head if I tell him the truth. He'll have yours as well, I refuse to allow that."

Virgil chuckled and gently tipped Logan's chin up. "You're a lot gentler than people think you are."

Their lips barely brushed against each other. In a semi-public place it was dangerous to even be standing this close.
