"Today you will be learning about wounds. The layers of skin, severity of the wound, signs that the wound is getting worse and how to treat the wound." Dr.Chang coughs then continues saying "There are many types of wounds that can damage the skin including abrasions, lacerations, rupture injuries, punctures, and penetrating wounds. Many wounds are superficial. Some wounds are deeper and need medical attention to prevent infection and loss of function.

I will now talk about the skin it is a large sensory organ that interacts with the environment, and sends signals to the brain. There are two layers of skin that cover the body, the epidermis and dermis.

The epidermis is the outermost layer of skin, the part that can be seen, and is very active with new skin cells being formed and gradually being shed. There are five different kinds of epidermal cells:Keratinocytes, Melanocytes, Langerhans cells, and Merkel cells.

The second layer of skin is the dermis it is the deeper layer of skin. It has two layers that are responsible for supporting the epidermis: papillary dermis and reticular dermis. Does everyone get what I am saying".

When Dr.Chang says that I put down the pencil I was using to copy every word he was saying and nod my head and turn to my side. I see Xiao Lin nod her head but her eyebrows are crunched together and over the ten days I have been with her I know that her expression means that she is confused.

So I shake her arm a little and tell her "When class is over i'll let you take pictures of my notes". I see her face relax and Dr.Chang continues with his leasson.

"Onto the next chapter Wounds they occur when the skin is broken or damaged because of injury. The skin can be damaged in a variety of ways. Superficial wounds and abrasions leave the deeper skin layers intact. These types of wounds are usually caused by friction rubbing against an abrasive surface.

Deep abrasions go through all the layers of the skin and into underlying tissue like muscle or bone. Puncture wounds are usually caused by a sharp pointed object entering the skin. Examples include a needle stick, stepping on a nail, or a stab wound with a knife. Human and animal bites can be classified as puncture wounds, abrasions, or a combination of both.

Most wounds can be cared for at home. Superficial abrasions and lacerations can be cleaned, an antibacterial ointment applied, and then covered with a Band-Aid or light bandage. Bleeding can be controlled with direct pressure to the wound, and if possible, elevating the bleeding site above the level of the heart.

This allows gravity to help decrease blood flow to the injury. Most bleeding will stop within 10 minutes and then a dressing can be placed over the wound. If the bleeding does not stop the wound may need stitches. You must also take into consideration of the size and location of the wound .

If bleeding is not a problem, the wound can be cleaned using tap water to wash out any debris to decrease the risk of infection. River and lake water can contain many types of bacteria that can cause significant infection.

You will have to make certain that there is no associated injury with the wound (for example, if a person falls on their chin, they may be at risk for a jaw fracture), and that the risk of infection is minimized. History is important to understand the circumstances of the injury, an animal bite will require more medical care than a fall on the playground. It is important to know the circumstances of the injury to decide how dirty the wound might be, and whether there are any potential underlying injuries.

People with diabetes, poor circulation, on dialysis are at higher risk of infection; and the decision to repair a wound may be affected by the wounded person's medical history. The time frame from when the injury happened, and when medical care happens is something you need to take in consideration. The longer a wound is left open, the higher the risk of infection if it is sutured. If the wound is older than 6 to 12 hours, it may not be sutured.

Sutures Aka Stitches and other types of wound dressing is something we will learn tomorrow everyone.

If a wound is cleaned and cared for properly, there is often little need to prescribe antibiotics. However, animal bites, human bites, wounds exposed to river or lake water contamination, or other significantly dirty wounds, poor circulation may be prescribed to prevent infection. It may also be prescribed if underlying structures like tendons or bones are involved.

The healing time for a wound depends upon the type of wound, the underlying injury, and the baseline health of the patient. Most minor wounds including simple lacerations and abrasions heal on their own and do not require medical care.

Signs of Infection are skin redness that spreads out from your injury, swelling, green or yellow fluid, or increased warmth or tenderness around the wound, you may have an infection. Other signs include swollen lymph nodes at your neck, armpit, or groin, as well as body aches, chills, or fever. With this are lesson is done for today and you are dismissed."

When he finished talking he walked out of the room and everyone in the room sighed. I saw Xiao Lin face and said "it's alright at least it was not like yesterday where we had to walk up the mountain and look at different types of herbs" She looked at me and grimaced "I don't know how you do it hike up that far with out breaking a sweat and writings so fast and understanding what he says at the same time"

I think to myself I know how I do it it's because I know the world is going to end soon and I do workout but I don't say that to her. I say "take a picture of the notes and study them I will study with you if you need help". She nods her head and takes the picture and says goodbye to me and I do the same. I drive home and sit in the parking lot and wait for Ji Wu Jiu, Xie Zhang, Kim Ji-Won, Troy Smith, Akari Smith, and He Chen to arrive some I can say goodbye to them because they are leaving for a business trip.

Just when I was thanking of them they appear. I get out of my car and greet them then I tell them to have a good trip. Akari and I talk while the guys bring there bags in their two cars she asks me if I will do anything fun while they are gone and I say "yeah learn how to take out and treat a bullet wound tomorrow". She looks at me amazed and then chuckles "well good tomorrow and tell me how it goes" she hugs me and then walks to the cars and wave and I say "have fun guys and bye Ji Wu".

When I say that Ji Wu looks at me and gives me a smile that can melt the arctic then he waves bye to me. I stand by my car and watch them leave then I walk inside the building into my home to exercise and then to sleep.
