Personality:
Rafael is a very grumpy, old man sort of guy. He's dead stubborn but pretty much always right. Seeing him smile is basically as rare as a full moon, but it means that you've done something amazing. Talking isn't exactly something he does often, he's usually quiet and thoughtful. With old friends, he enjoys teasing and playing rough.
Smart, Rafael is full to the brim with knowledge and clever tricks. He's an expert tactician, arguably one of the bests in the country. His voice is typically monotone, showing very little emotion. After getting to know him, you find out that his words really do have emotion.
There's a soft side to him, although he seldom shows it. Most of his older apprentices can see his soft side, which they tease him about. After getting close to him, he'll show his approval and love by saying nothing- or challenging you again. Like most rangers, there's no woman in his life- but he has a special soft side towards one particular scribe.
Likes:
Coffee (like all Rangers, it's almost an addiction), his apprentices, helping people, his horse, children (will never admit it), and the quiet.
Dislikes:
Incompetent people, greed, people who underestimate him, failing, talkative people, actual magic, bullies, and water.

His loved ones in danger, failing people, dying someday, losing his horse, and magic.
Backstory:
Rafael was born first in the Amouteru family, eldest son and pride to his father. His whole life, he was expected to become a knight like his father. So, his childhood consisted of him practising with his father and spending time with his sisters.
By 16, it was unfortunately clear about what would happen. His application to battle school was rejected on the grounds that he was too small and weak. However, something unbelievable happened.
Veronica, only 12 at the time, was playing in a river with Rafael. Two of her most cruel bullies came along and, to mess with her, pulled her under the water. They were soon-to-be knights and almost double Rafael's size. He did everything he could to get them off his sister but he only managed to distract them, causing them to let Veronica drown. Using his wit, he managed to knock both the bullies out but not in time.
Despite his failure, a ranger, Halt, spotted Rafael and decided that he would make a good ranger. After a little while of mourning, Rafael moved in with Halt and learned to be a Ranger. His apprenticeship when by totally uneventful and after, he took a northern field to be his. He did quite a bit during his time as a ranger, including mentoring three apprentices and counting- Anna, Peter, and James.
