In The Long Run (10)

I'm twelve weeks pregnant, so three months, only six more to go. Wayne and I were at the doctor yesterday for an appointment for another sonar and prenatal check up. I can actually see the baby starting to take shape and I hate to admit it, but I actually had to hold my tears back. We had the same doctor as last time, Dr. Gustavo and he clued us in on what's been happening. Apparently the baby is starting to form finger- and toenails and its vocal cords have just been formed this week. It's also starting to grow a little hair and its hands and feet aren't webbed anymore, which brings me great pleasure, knowing I won't be giving birth to an amphibian. Oh and did I mention its kidneys are functional? That means that if it swallows amniotic fluid, it can work it out of its system. In other words, it can pee now or as Dr. Gustavo put it, urinate. How splendidly scientific. My mom brought us this time and she got pretty choked up about it all. I'm just glad I wasn't the only one. I have to say, it's been pretty amazing so far. I read a quote on this pregnancy website today that said:

"Pregnancy is getting company inside one's skin."

I thought it was kind of cute, because I knew exactly what it meant. I feel a little like a crazy person. Sometimes I would just start randomly talking to the baby. I know, I know, I'm getting a little psycho, but it was actually fun. Wayne has almost caught me a few times, but I don't want anyone finding out. Being sentimental will ruin my reputation as a tough, independent smartass. Wayne's also taking this more seriously than he would like to admit. After the whole incident with Nick and his mom, he moved in with his dad, who was really laid back about the whole "pregnant girlfriend" thing. Wayne did make up with his mom though. She'd called a few days after Nick beat the crap out of him, saying she was sorry and that it would be better if he stayed with his father until everything cooled off at home. So, ever since he'd moved in with his dad, he's been reading all kinds of pregnancy and parenting books. It gets annoying sometimes, but I'm proud of him for wanting to do his best. He's made a point of it that we go for a walk everyday, to stay fit and healthy. I just wish he'd give the so-called 'motivation' a rest. Him urging me on to keep up while I'm ahead sure is motivating, but it makes him look stupid.

The bump is more pronounced now than ever and it gets harder and harder to hide it. Rumors about me being pregnant had started to circulate around school, but no one is 100% sure yet, since no one has been told, except Dean who found out by tricking me of course. I just try to stay as far away from him as possible.

It was Friday, hallelujah, so I couldn't wait to get home and put my feet up. It's been a really long week, but Liz promised me this morning that she'd help me relax when I get home. I should be happy, but I'm a little scared of what she'll throw at me. She was picking me up from school, so I stuffed my books in my locker and was about to close it when someone's hand stretched past my head and threw a sunflower into my locker. I smiled, took it out and turned around to give Wayne a hug. He hugged me back tightly, making sure not to hurt me though.

"You going home with Liz?" he asked casually.

"Yeah, you have practice, right?"

"Yup, unfortunately and straight after I'm going to work."

"That sucks. Well, I'll miss you while Liz is affectionately torturing me."

"Torturing you?" he asked furrowing his brows.

"I'm not sure what she'll be doing yet, but she intends to help me 'relax'."

"Aw, I'm sure it won't be that bad."

"Munroe?!" Oh please, no. My eyes grew wide and so did Wayne's when he looked over my shoulder. I gulped and grabbed onto Wayne, practically shaking.

"Run." I whisper yelled to him, but he didn't. He took my hands that were clinging to him and rubbed tiny little circles with his thumbs. It helped a little, but only until I heard her footsteps getting closer.

"It's okay. I won't let her kill you." he said quietly.

"It's not me I'm worried about her killing." I told him. "It's you." His brow furrowed in confusion, but she was already standing behind me, so he couldn't say anything more. I turned around slowly and tried smiling casually, but my heart was beating so fast, it made my teeth chatter.

"There's practice tomorrow afternoon at three. I expect you to be there on time and ready."

I started to open my mouth, but... "She can't." My mouth shut instantly and I spun around to give Wayne an angry look. He only glanced down at me for a second, before looking back at the coach.

"And her practice is your business how?" coach asked, clearly annoyed by Wayne's presence. She's never really liked him, but I never knew why. It only made the situation worse, because when she finds out I'm pregnant, she'll not just dislike him, she'll hate him and probably me as well.

"She's coming with me to a family thing tomorrow. It was been planned a month ago, so we're not cancelling." he said confidently, which surprised me. What surprised me more was that I knew nothing of this 'family thing'. The coach looked thoroughly annoyed now and she exhaled a big blow of air through her nose, which kind of reminded me of a bull. Damn, this woman is scary.

"Fine, but if you miss the practice next week, Munroe, you're off the team and I'll put another runner in your place." she said seriously.

"G-got it coach." I said, not looking at her as she walked away, but only letting out a sigh when I was sure she was gone and Wayne massaged my shoulders lightly. It felt pretty good.

"See? That wasn't so bad, was it?"

"Noooo..." I dragged it out, because he was still massaging my shoulders and it was immensely relaxing. "Can't you and Liz switch places? This is what I call relaxing."

He chuckled and gave my neck a kiss.

"I'll see you tomorrow okay?" he said against me ear. I took a hold of his hands on my shoulders and wrapped them around my waist.

"Why don't you sneak into my window again tonight?" I asked with a mischievous glint in my eye, but he only chuckled and gave me a kiss on the temple.

"I don't think so, at least not right now, but maybe we could next week."

I turned around and pouted at him, which in return made him kiss me before letting his hands slip off my waist.

"Oh, by the way, what family thing are we attending?"

"Nothing, it was just a quick excuse. I'm not letting you do any serious exercise with that woman." he said seriously and I knew he meant it.

"Good thinking, you devious little genius. You're such a good liar, which makes me worry." I gave him another quick kiss and a hug. "See you tomorrow then." I said, walking away from him and towards the main entrance.

"Love you!" I heard him shout after me.

"I know!" I shouted back cockily.

The last thing I heard before I opened the main entrance's door was his chuckle echoing through the empty hall.
