It was Wednesday. Wayne was at school, so that left me at home, by myself, again. I was getting used to it though. This week I am thirty-eight and a half weeks along and the more I think about it, the more scared I get. Somewhere within the next two weeks, I'm going to have a baby. For months I've tried to convince myself that everything's going to be okay, but it wasn't really working. This dark cloud was looming over my head everywhere I went and it was just waiting for the perfect moment to soak me in a shower of despair. I wasn't going to let it though. I had my mental umbrella ready. My mom kept reminding me that everything will turn out fine and I knew that if I was anything like her, I'd be a great mom anyway. Think happy thoughts, that was my new motto, now I just had to stick with it. It was very tough when you're bored out of your skull though. I had absolutely nothing left to do. I've read through every magazine in the house twice, I've watched enough TV to completely fry my brain and I'v even considered taking up knitting. Knitting!!! You don't get more bored than that.
Around lunch time, my mom came home from work to spend the time with me and she made us grilled cheese sandwiches. We sat at the kitchen table, munching away when the phone rang. Mom went and picked it up then looked at me.
"It's for you." she told me.
I stood up and took the phone from her. "Hello?"
"Hey, Jay! Guess who!"
"Curly!" I called over the phone excitedly. I was so happy just to hear her voice, because with everything I had going on and she had going on, we didn't get to spend enough time together. "Aren't you supposed to be in class?"
"Nope, it's lunch remember?" she told me. "Well, I called because Caroline just told me that your favorite vintage store down by the mall is having a sale this weekend and I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to catch up."
"That sounds great. Saturday then?"
"Yeah, we can catch a bite to eat afterwards and there's this amazingly cute onesie I thought I'd get the baby."
"Nothing for me?" I pretended to be sad.
"Nah ah, you've been spoiled enough lately from what Wayne tells me."
"Oh really? What does he tell you?"
"Only that he and your parents wait on you every hour of the day and that you get to loaf around the house all day."
"Hey! I have loafing rights okay. I'm probably sixty pound heavier than I was nine months ago."
She laughed on the other side of the line. "So we settled for Saturday?"
"Sure."
"Great. I'll be there to pick you up at one."
"Okay, I'll see you then."
"See you soon, bestie!"
I put the phone back and sat back down at the kitchen table. My mom gave me a semi-serious look, which meant she was about to give me some important advice.
"You and Curly are going shopping this weekend?" she asked.
"Yup." I told her with my mouth full.
"Okay. You should just take it easy, okay? Sit down whenever you need to, because this last week or two is really going to tucker you out. Plus, the maybe could to decide to make it' appearance anytime now."
"Don't worry mom." I reassured her. "If he's anything like me, he'll probably be late."
She smiled. "You still think it's a boy, huh?"
"I'm sure of it."
She laughed a little. "We'll see."
Saturday came a lot slower than I anticipated, but when it did come around, I decided to make it the best day Curly and I have spent together, ever. Wayne, of course, made his routine visit that morning and ended up a little upset when I told him he couln't come along.
