I look up at the menu, looking over the items for the fifth time. I check my watch for what feels like the millionth time. Where were they? I look around hoping luck was with me, wishing I would see them at the front of the restaurant or in the windows. I only see the couples and families eating dinner together, many in a joyous mood. I slip more of my water, fish out a few bills and stand up. I was tired of waiting, I sent a quick text to them, letting them know my current intentions and sling my purse on my shoulder. I smile kindly to the waitress and walk out to the street corner.

The sun was setting, leaving a yellow-orange tint on ever surface. The streetlights start to blink on, and a light rain starts to fall. "Hey," a deep voice said. I look up to source the voice. Charles. "Yeah, sorry." He pauses, as if searching for a believable lie. "I was busy with work."

"Really? You didn't care to even call me." I fold my arms, "how can I trust you?" I try to fight back tears. It wasn't the first time we had a conversation like this. Constantly my friends asked why I dealt with him, to be honest, I really didn't know.

He tilts his head, "I have always been honest with you Jess. I am sorry if I have done anything to lose your trust." He sighs, his blue eyes looking down. "Good night Jess," he says before turning around and walking down the street again.

I take out my keys and walk over to my car, which was not far away. I then head for one destination where I did not have to wait. Home.

I pull up the drive way and open the front door. I kick off my shoes and close the door. I rest my stuff on a nearby coffee table and sit in my office. I smile at my laptop and read the manuscript before me. I am an editor, new to the position but greatly experienced with author internships.

The phone rings, my eyebrows furrow, the home phone never rings at this time. I walk to the kitchen, we the phone sits with a thin film of dust. I wipe it off and read the caller ID, Charles. I thought of possible reasons why he would call the house phone, but each one more outrageous than the last. "Hello?" I say into the phone.

No answer. I hang up the phone, wondering if it was some prank call and go back to my manuscript. I focus all of my attention on the story, forgetting about my day as I live the life of the characters.
