Day 2 on my journey through this year of loneliness and disappointment.
Nobody had talked to me, which was both a relief and a personal insult, and apparently the teacher didn't expect anything from me (yet), so the morning passed by smoothly.
Just like yesterday, I walked past the cafeteria and went outside to eat my lunch on the grass, hopefully with the company of my new best and only friend Birdie the Great.
I sat down on a bench next to a big tree and tried to ignore the old chewing gum sticking to the bench as I ate.
I saw something moving from the corner of my eyes and turned around - to see a bird that looked just like Birdie the Great! I was too happy about his appearance to think of the fact that I had actually no idea how to differentiate birds and that this probably was Birdie's great aunt.
I tried to feed him or her or whatever gender Birdie wanted to be an apple, but apparently Birdie was a picky eater and flew away in shock when I threw a piece of my apple at him.
"You do know that you shouldn't be throwing food directly at birds, right?"
I flinched, dropped my apple, cursed and looked up. Three boys were now sitting under the tree, smiling uncertainly.
"Of course I knew that," I mumbled as I picked up the apple and tried to throw it into the nearest trash can. Obviously, I missed.
They bursted out laughing.
I felt my face getting hotter by second as I stood up and threw away the apple.
"Aren't you the new girl? Sarah?", the boy with light brown hair asked.
"Sofia," I corrected him. "How do you know me?"
"Umm...We're in the same class, actually."
More laughter from his friends.
"Oh. Sorry. I still have to get used to my new classmates."
"Right, it's only your second day here. What are you doing outside anyways?"
"Eating?"
At this point, the blond guy next to the boy I was talking to was laughing while hitting unholy tones higher than the tree they were sitting under.
"But why are you eating alone?"
"Like you said, it's only my second day here. I don't know anyone."
"Now you know us!", the black haired guy said.
"Yeah. Great."
"Sit with us!"
I walked over to them and sat down next them as the situation kept getting more awkward. I started playing with the sleeves of my jacket.
"This," the brown haired boy said, "Is Mark. He's one grade above us and from Toronto. And this," he pointed at the blond haired guy, "Is Chenle from Shanghai. He's a year younger than us."
"And you are?"
"Since you apparently don't remember, I'm Renjun from Jilin, China. We're the same age."
"Oh, okay then."
They looked at me expectantly.
"Right, I'm Sofia from Sequim, North America."
"How long have you been in Korea?", Mark asked.
"Not too long. This is my second week, I think."
We talked for the rest of lunch break. About unimportant things - but at least I had made three new friends and that surely was an achievement.
I went to class much happier that afternoon because Renjun was walking next to me.
