You stood on the podium, and I saw that you had put on your coat, a long white coat, stiff, and starchy.
"Hello again," you said, smiling slightly over the microphone. "I'm Jaemin, a first year medic undergraduate. It seems that a lot of you are interested in the field of medicine, so I'm here this morning to give you a brief overview of what to expect as a freshman, and to provide some pointers on how to score in your entrance exam to help your entry into medicine."
"He's so cool, look at him in that white coat, omg, I can't breathe just looking at him..."
Hina was beginning to get on my nerves, and then I looked around, and saw that all the girls, even the hard-core nerdy ones, were ogling you, just eating you up with their eyes, and drinking you in with their gaping mouths.
God, I hated them all.
I hadn't felt this jealous since - well, since Sara.
But you stood there, standing like an angel, with that enormous white coat flapping about your knees, smiling, your deep voice filling the hall, reverberating off the walls, drinking in their love, their adulation. Geez, how could anyone look so gorgeous in that stiff, starchy thing, how on earth could a huge, oversized, shapeless, uninspiring bleached tent of a garment accentuate the grace of your physique, that lean frame, the light blue shirt tucked oh, so casually into that firm waist, those sleek black pants moulding those long slim legs of yours so smoothly, so silkily?
You moved a little, and I forgot the stiff white coat at once, for I saw the curve of your jaw, and your bare arms peeking from the open sleeves. I remembered the hardness of your jawline, the feel of your stubble prickling beneath my fingertips, rough beneath my touch. And then I heard Hina sigh in rapture beside me, "Oh, look at him, just look at him...I don't even know what he's saying, he's too distracting..."
We sat in rows, and studied the aptitude questionnaires handed to us. HOW SURE ARE YOU THAT YOU'D MAKE A GOOD DOCTOR? PICK A, B, C OR D, AND CHECK YOUR SCORE ON THE LAST PAGE. Whoa. Talk about intimidating. Hina next to me was gritting her teeth in determination.
"I'm going to get into medical school here if it's the last thing I do." Her face looked scary.
"Because of him?"
I nodded towards the tall white figure bending solicitously over some girl pretending to not understand some shit in the questionnaire.
"Yeah. I'm in love..."
"Has it ever occurred to you that he's already taken? That's a ring he's wearing on his finger."
"Oh, that means nothing." She shrugged. "There's this guy in my school with a ring and a girlfriend, and he's shagging a different girl every weekend."
She looked at me and grinned.
"Can you guess what we call him?"
"Shaggy?"
She giggled.
"Bingo."
"I thought you said all the guys in your school were nerds."
"Yeah, they all are, this nerd thing is catching in my school, it's like a virus, and the only guy who's immune is Shaggy - and that's because he's a jerk."
"Hey. What are you girls laughing about?"
Omg. You sneaked up so quietly we hadn't even noticed you were there.
"Oh, it's - it's nothing," Hina's face had gone completely red. "Just a private joke."
I giggled.
"Are you having any problems with the questionnaire, or do you have any questions you'd like to ask me?" You bent down, smiling into Hina's eyes. It made me want to box your ears.
"Oh, yes," she breathed. "I have so many questions, I don't even know where to begin..."
I watched you helping her with her fake questions, her random pointing to some random questions, her eyes on your face bent so close to her. It seemed an eternity before you turned to her and said, "Okay, that's it? Anything else?" And she shook her head breathlessly and sighed, "Nooo...I can't thank you enough, sunbae," and batted her eyelashes at you. I felt a bit sick, and looked down grimly at my questionnaire.
"What about you, Miss, ah, Kim, am I right?" I ignored you, and savagely blackened A, B, C and D in rapid succession, my pencil lead almost grinding a hole in the thin paper beneath my vicious jabs.
"Ah," you said, and bent close to my face, and murmured, "You forgot this part.."
"Here," you pointed, and turned, your face facing away from Hina, and you looked at me with hot eyes.
And I forgot how mad, how jealous I was at once.
You bent low over the paper, pretending to read my answers. And I bent a little closer to you, and whispered, "I don't really understand this part, sunbae..."and tapped it, and my breath mingled with yours, as we both bent over the empty space that my finger rested on. And then I saw your hand trembling a little, and I thought, smiling to myself, this is exciting to you, your hand is trembling; and my heart started to beat at breakneck speed. I looked up, still smiling, and I saw, that you were watching me, watching my secret smile.
How odd it is, I thought to myself, that I am flirting with you. Here I am, in a strange place, smiling at you, tossing my hair, looking at you beneath my eyelashes, watching you looking at me, playing with me so smoothly, with your eyes, your lips.
"It's very simple, really," you said huskily, jabbing blindly at the empty space. "You just have to concentrate on the first part, and ignore the rest..."
What on earth are you talking about, I wondered, and I looked at you, and you looked utterly confused as well, and I almost burst out laughing, and you looked like you wanted to laugh as well.
But you kept looking at me. It was as though you could not drag your eyes away from me, and boldly I stared you out, so that your eyes kindled and you flushed a little. And now it was me who let my eyes linger upon you, the open blue shirt, the bare arms, the throat, the head of longish hair curling at the starched collar, and I said, "Oh, I see...why, it's all so clear now..."
And your white coat lay next to me and had a fascination, strange, unknown. exciting, and I stretched my finger just a little, and touched the edge of it lightly, the bit that grazed your bare arm, and you sprang up at once, as if you had been stung, your face flushed, your breathing erratic. You stood beside me, and cleared your throat, and I watched you, between half-closed eyes.
I drank in the blaze of heat from your eyes and felt a surge of power.
"Is that all, Miss Kim?" Your voice is strained, a little hoarse.
"Oh, yes, sunbae," I smiled sweetly. "Thank you so much."
You stalked back to your seat in front, and pulled out your phone.
I waited. I had a huge desire to laugh, but I stopped myself.
My phone buzzed.
It was a text from you, of course.
YOU'RE A TEASE, KIM MINA.
I texted back:
AND YOU'RE A FLIRT, NA JAEMIN.
I waited.
Buzz buzz.
I'M GOING TO PUNISH YOU.
I texted back:
I. CAN'T. WAIT.
