The 24th king of Silla, Jin Heung, formed a group of warriors, which were Hwarang.

The Hwarang were trained in weapons such as the sword, spear and bow.

They devoted their lives to save Silla that ruled over the southern and central parts of the Korean Peninsula. This ancient knights od Silla were all elite men, chosen from high society families, and were trained to become a great warriors at a very young age. They were all educated with the highest standard in their time. All of them were well-bred and well-groomed.

Before Hwarang was formed, there were a class of female cadets called Wonhwa (Original flowers) which consists of 300 young women chosen for their beauty and skill. Later on, the king of Silla decided to form another organization like the Wonhwa, which is why Hwarang was founded.

The Hwarang often met in places of great natural beauty, especially sacred mountains and rivers, to sing and dance.

One famous member of Hwarang is General Kim Yushin who led the campaign in defeating the other Kingdoms to unite the Korean peninsula.

The Hwarang became a great part of History of Korea.

In Taekwondo, there is a stance named "Hwarang" to honor them as one of the greatest fighters.

And a Korean television series called "Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth" was released based in the real story of Hwarang in Silla.

THE CODE OF CONDUCT OF HWARANG

1. To serve the king with loyalty.

2. To serve one's parents with loyalty.

3. To always show loyalty to one's friends.

4. To never retreat in battle.

5. To never kill unnecessarily.
