In Korea, on the 14th of April, single people of all sorts gather together and mourn their seemingly, eternal aloneness. This important tradition is called Black Day (블랙데이).
The tradition of Black Day is a pretty simple one:
• Dress in an all black outfit including accessories, glasses and nail polish.
• Meet up with fellow single people and complain about being alone, other couples or just about life in general.
• Chow down on a bowl or two of Jjajangmyeon (짜장면)-a noodles covered in a thick black bean paste.
But instead of being completely depressing event, Black Day has evolved from a tradition for the romantically unfortunate into a celebration of singleness and being alone. Rather than spend the whole day wallowing in self pity, those who take part in the Black Day festivities (maybe after a cry or two), use the time to gather and have an enjoyable time with friends. Being single isn'ta all that bad at all, especially when there is a great excuse to be inhaling bowls of Jjajangmyeon.
