🏜 Pit stop

It's going to be a long drive.

"We've been on the road for two hours." Jack's voice came from the back of the van. He spoke through the tiny window I had left slightly open.

I didn't bother answering him though. I just kept my eyes on the road. My hand firmly gripping the steering wheel. This was just business. I wasn't planning on befriending a serial killer anytime soon.

"If you not going to say anything..." he continued now sounding desperate and frustrated as I ignored him for the second time, "at least tell me your name." To that I didn't respond. "Fine, ignore me." He huffed. What an attention seeker.

There was nothing but silence now. I turned on the AC since it was a really hot today although it was humid outside. A mass of grey clouds covering the sky. I felt the cool wind of the Air Con hit my face.

I left the radio off so that I could listen to Jack. You know, just in case he tries to escape and go on a "killing spree." Boss wouldn't be happy about that. I have no idea how I'm going to work with this loose cannon though. Boss specifically told me to shoot to kill if he gets out of hand.

"I need to take a wiz." He spoke almost in a murmur but his voice was slightly raised in order to get my attention.

I stopped the van on the side of the road. Practically in the middle of nowhere. All that could be seen was the route 66 sign and desert as far as the eye could see. It was grey out because of the clouds and as I opened the door to the van I could feel the warm humid air flow into the vehicle as the AC switched off once I pulled the keys out of the ignition.

I'm not stupid enough to leave my keys in the van. Who knows what tricks this criminal has up his sleeve and other than that I know a thing or two about hijackers. Having the van being stolen and getting trapped in the middle of nowhere with a blood thirsty murderer was definitely not on my to do list.

Placing the keys in the inside pocket of my jacket I then pulled out the rifle I had kept nice and snug under my seat. I walked to the back of the van and unlocked the bolted doors the guard had so nicely sealed shut. The chain landed on the ground. I opened the doors and a glum looking Jack looked at me as the doors shot open.

He sure looked depressed based on the expression he gave me. "Get out." I said firmly as I gave him a blank expression.

"Oh, now she wants to speak."

"Do you need to do your business or what? It's going to be a long ride. You either go now or you keep it in for four more hours, it's your choice." I still kept the blank expression on my face that I had shown him earlier.

"Okay, okay," he said moving forward with his hands still behind his back because of the restraining jacket the guard hadn't bothered to remove, "I'll be out now," he used the van to get himself up and then walked towards the exit doors. He paused when he reached the doors of the van. "Just, one question..." He said. I internally rolled my eyes feeling annoyed with him only for him to look at me intently.

"What?"

"How do I get this off?" He looked down towards his restraining jacket.

"Figure, something out."

"You are aware that I can't pee in this, right?" He questioned slightly gritting his teeth. "It's like wearing a dungaree and there is no zipper."

"Do you really have a pee on?" I questioned with a serious face.

"Yes, as a matter of fact I do."

"Then why are you still standing here and talking to me? I stopped the car for you, go and do your business."

"How can I when I have this thing on." He practically screamed but his voice lowered like he had calmed himself down. He took a breath. "Can you at least help me get the restraining jacket off, you can cuff my hands if you feel it's too risky." He said as he looked at me. It was as though he were trying to bargain. His shaggy hair was such a mess and already going in his greyish blue eyes.

"Fine." I stretched out as I went to the front of the van and got the hand cuffs. He was still there waiting for me but it's not like he could run with that restraining jacket on and even if he did, he won't be able to do anything since his hands are stuck behind his back.

I kept the rifle on me just in case. "Turn around." I said coldly.

"You know I never realised how pretty your eyes are." He said no doubt trying his luck. I'm not falling for the flattery trap.

"Shut up," I ignored his comment, "and turn around."

"Okay," he sighed and turned around while I started to unbuckle the back of the restraining jacket as I kept his hands firmly in place so that I could cuff them, "so," he said as I was busy undoing the rest of the buckles, "what's your name?" he inquired.

I wasn't going to answer but I figured since we were going to be working together I should at least tell him my name, not that it's my real one. Working for the CIA was kind of like having a double life and so Jane was more of a fake name I used so that I couldn't be tracked.

"Jane." I said reluctantly.

"So you mean to tell me that if I killed you, you'd just be another Jane Doe?" He snickered to himself. I didn't laugh at this. "I'm joking," he said as I now harshly cuffed his wrists, "I just meant since your name is Jane and all it just reminded me of that," he covered up now, probably picking up the tension.

I finished cuffing him and left the rest of the restraining jacket slumped around his waist. "That's as far as I'm going," I said, "you can take it from there," I turned to walk off when I heard...

"But my hands are cuffed, how can I possibly get this down my legs."

"Figure something out," I deadpanned, "you ungrateful cheese stick."

"I'm not a stick and I'm definitely not made of cheese but fine..." he didn't get a chance to finish.

"You have 5 minutes to find a bush and do whatever you have to do and if you not back by the time," I showed him my stop watch, "this stop watch goes off, I'll shoot."

"Geez, hasty, hasty." He said.

To be continued...
