Olivia dressed Quinn in his favourite overalls and red t-shirt, she set him in front of the TV and went to get ready herself.
She walked into the bathroom and left the door slightly open. She slipped out of her cable knit sweater and sweatpants and turned on the hot water in the shower. Her eyes caught a glimpse of her naked body in the full-length mirror and she moved closer toward the image. She involuntarily flinched as she passed her hand over the scar at the base of her abdomen. Memories of that day began to come back. Bad memories and good memories; it was the happiest and saddest day of her life all wrapped up in one.
"I'm sorry ma'am, we did all we could, but it wasn't enough."
Her hand travelled up between her breasts and found the vertical scar between them. Her heart. Her heart was broken in more ways than she could have imagined, but now she had a scar to remind her of the many emotional and now physical heartbreaks she had endured.
She swiped the tear that had fallen and glimpsed out at Quinn before getting into the shower. Hoping to wash away the pain and grief as she showered.
After getting dressed, she threw some basics in his diaper bag then fished his stroller out of the closet and picked him up. She opened the door and was greeted by the snippy Alaskan air, but mostly the screams of her friend Rebecca's children.
"Quinn!! Hey Quinn! "Rebecca's 5-year-old son, David screamed. She placed Quinn on the grass and let him run toward David, whose arms were wide open. The bond between them was beautiful. Quinn always lit up when he saw David and David was happy to play with another boy, as he had twin sisters.
Rebecca's twin girls, Arin and Cara ran full-on and almost knocked Olivia over.
"Hey! Look how tan you guys are! Was your vacation fun?!" Olivia beamed in her most high pitched voice. They both blurted out various things simultaneously and Olivia really couldn't even make one thing out.
"That's amazing!" She lied.
Cara and Arin ran off to join David and Quinn who was now rolling on the grass.
"Hey, I'm guessing they had fun in The Bahamas," Olivia laughed as she hugged her friend.
"Yeah, it was tiring for Paul and I, but they had so much fun on the beach. The Bahamas was beautiful even though I spent most of my time making sure they didn't wander off. The storm made the trip back hell though, Cara kept screaming." She complained.
"Quinn kept screaming too, it was horrible and I couldn't even help him," she said, feeling defeated at the thought of the memory.
"Babies cry, we can't help them sometimes," she reassured her.
She turned her attention to the four small children rolling down the small slope, "Speaking of babies." she laughed.
"Yeah, we better get going, the park closes early today," Olivia said, checking her watch.
"Dave! Cara! Arin, let's go guys!" Rebecca shouted.
Arin and Cara ran as fast as their little legs could carry them toward the car and David walked quickly behind with Quinn falling out of his arms. Rebecca opened the door of the SUV and buckled both of the twins inside.
"I just put David's old seat in to save time, I hope you don't mind," Rebecca said.
"Nah, it's great actually, saves me from having to take out his," She laughed.
"Ok, I guess we're set then, the food's in the trunk, kids in the car, car filled with gas... are you guys ready?!" Rebecca shouted toward the children.
Their shouts of excitement filled the Jeep and Olivia and Rebecca got in the car and began the drive to the makeshift waterpark.

They had been riding in continuous noise as all four of the children were singing--well trying to sing along to a song on the radio.
"Remember that doctor I told you about?" Rebecca pressed, her voice hopeful.
Olivia ran a hand through her hair and readied herself for another one of her friend's attempt to get her a date.
"The one who moved from Australia...?" She asked.
"Yup, he's single," she said wiggling her eyebrows.
"Beccs I love you but stop trying to set me up with people!" Olivia laughed.
Rebecca turned onto the road leading to the waterpark and the huge sign cause the children to scream for joy.
"Well...I maybe...kind of...invited him and his daughter to come," she whispered, especially the last part.
"YOU WHAT?!" Olivia shouted. "I don't know him! He could be a murderer!"
"No... He's a sexy guy with an even sexier accent, Liv," Rebecca said in her best teenage girl voice.
"Reb-"
"Here we are, guys!!" Rebecca screamed, as she pulled into a space in the parking lot.
Screams of joy erupted from the back seat Rebecca got out of the car to let them out.
"This is not over my friend," Olivia shouted, as she got Quinn out.
