Neji x reader - Treetop kisses

"Damn!" You gritted your teeth, swaying precariously from your perch on the tree branch. "Don't startle me like that!"

Tenten smirked. "Why? Are you stalking Neji?"

You turned a brilliant red. "N-no! Why would you say that?"

She giggled. "You have no idea how obvious it is. Even Gai-sensei figured it out."

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"Sure you don't. But don't worry, Neji doesn't know. I had no idea he could be so oblivious."

You let out a sigh. "Good. I'd die of embarrassment if he found out."

"If who found out what?" A new voice spoke from above you.

You gave a small shriek and toppled off the branch.

Neji looked down at you with both concern and confusion. "Are you all right?"

"Yeah," You squeaked and turned invisible (it's your clan's kekkei genkai)

Tenten threw up her hands in exasperation. "Damn it, Neji! Now she's gonna hide from me for the rest of the day! Do you have any idea how hard it was to corner her, you oblivious idiot?"

Neji blinked. "What am I oblivious to?"

"Everything!" Tenten slid down the tree and stormed off, muttering about clueless boys and leaving behind a very confused Neji in the tree.

You blinked back into visibility after having put a considerable distance between yourself and the tree. Cheeks still flaming red, you leaned against some random building.

"[Y/n]!" A very annoyed Tenten yelled from where she stood on top of another building.

You didn't have enough chakra to disappear again, so you gave her a small wave, completely winded.

She leapt off the building, landing perfectly on her feet and stomped towards you.

You gulped. This did not bode well.

"How dare you run away from me like that?" Her voice was deadly quiet now, but carried enough venom to kill an army. It made the hairs on your arms stand up.

"I'm sorry..." you hung your head. "I was just embarrassed."

She seemed to deflate. "Oh. Right. Anyway, Hinata verified a theory of mine. That's why I was looking for you."

"Which theory? The one about Gai-sensei being secretly in love with Kakashi-sensei? Or the one about Gaara-"

She interrupted. "The one about Neji liking you back."

You were dumbstruck.

"It's true. Hinata caught him doodling both of your names together. With hearts." She winked.

"Tenten... if you're joking about this..."

"I promise I'm not. Cross my heart."

You nodded slowly. "Okay... so what do I do now?"

"Go and tell him!"

You paled. She rolled her eyes.

"You have nothing to be afraid of! He likes you back!"

"I guess you're right. Where is he now?"

She grinned. "Probably exactly where you left him."

Tenten was right. Neji had stayed on the tree. From your vantage point around fifty metres behind him, you could only see his back, though.

"He looks unhappy," Tenten noted. "He only slouches when he's unhappy."

You nodded in agreement, not taking your eyes off him.

"Go talk to him." She gave you a small shove. Dazedly, you stumbled towards the tree and walked up it, sitting down next to him.

"Hi," you mumbled, blushing slightly.

"Hello." The same colour tinted his cheeks.

"JUST KISS ALREADY!" Tenten yelled.

Your face felt nuclear. "So... I like you."

He froze. "Really?"

"Yeah."

"NEJI, YOU KNOW FULLY WELL THAT YOU LIKE HER BACK! LIKE I SAID, KISS HER ALREADY!"

Neji looked nervous. A rare thing for him. "So, should we? I mean, can I? May I?"

You gave him a small smile. "Okay."

Blushing, he leaned in and placed his lips gently on yours.

As soon as he felt you kiss back, he wrapped his arms around you, setting off fireworks in your stomach. You looped your arms around his neck, running your fingers through his beautiful hair.

All too soon, you both broke apart. Looking down in embarrassment, you realised that you had gotten yourself an audience.

"YEAH, NEJI!" Naruto cheered.

"Baka! Give them privacy!" Sakura dragged him away.

"Hey! You were watching too, Sakura-chan!"

"Kyaaa! You guys are my new OTP!" Ino squealed, with hearts in her eyes.

Chōji looked confused as he swallowed a mouthful of chips. "What's an OTP? And who was your previous one?"

"Damn... another hottie taken." Kiba shook his head mournfully.

"It is not like you had a chance with her. Why? She was clearly besotted with Neji from the beginning," Shino told him.

"This is a drag... bye." Shikamaru wandered off.

"Congratulations, Neji-nii-san."

"Neji! [Y/n]! That was a beautifully youthful display!" Lee ran in circles around the tree.

"Uh, guys? Do you mind?" Tenten death-glared at them all.

"Sorry," they mumbled, vanishing.

"Really?" You asked her.

She held up her hands in surrender. "Hey, I'm helping. Sheesh."
