The Past

7 year old Kinsley Morgan huddled under her bed trying to drown out the cries of her mother as her father beat her. She whimpered in pain while she moved to a different position trying to get comfortable as her ribs still hurt from a few days ago when she got hit by him. Kinsley couldn't remember a time when she didn't cower and hide in fear. Finally silence reigned in the house and she shivered in fear.

"Please don't come in here, please don't come in here," she chanted again and again wishing, hoping that someone will come save her.

She heard footsteps stop outside her door. She held her breath hoping that he would leave her alone. She cringed when she heard the door open.

"Kinsley, come out this instant," her father boomed in a loud voice.

Kinsley whimpered as she crawled out from under the bed. Her dad scoffed at her and grabbed her ponytail. Kinsley yelped with pain as he forced her to stand up. "You brought this on yourself you know. If your mother wasn't such a whore and you weren't a coward everything would be better."

Kinsley could smell the booze on him. He was never as bad when he wasn't drinking but those times were far and few between. She closed her eyes as she saw his hand lift up bracing herself for the hit.

Present - 12 years later

Kinsley gasped as she woke up. Her heart was beating fast and she was drenched in sweat. She grabbed her chest trying to calm her breathing. She took a couple deep breaths and laid back down. She closed her eyes and groaned. Another dream. She looked over to the other side of the bed and saw Trevor sleeping soundly. She smiled at his sleeping state. He could sleep through anything.

"I might as well go have a run before a shower. I don't think I will be getting anymore sleep," she muttered to herself.

She got up, dressed in a sports bra and shorts, threw her dark brown hair in a ponytail and quietly opened the door. She smiled as she breathed in the cool, crisp air. It was still early and the sun was just coming up. She grabbed her ipod and started her morning run. She loved running. Trevor thought she was crazy for running for fun but she loved it. It was one of the few times she could leave everything behind and just be free. Her thoughts were haunted by her past and running calmed them down. Once she got back as she opened the door, she smelled the delicious smell of pancakes and bacon.

Trevor was at the kitchen cooking, shirtless. Kinsley thought he was absolutely gorgeous, had felt that for the longest time but of course refused to act on her feelings for him. She refused to ruin their friendship. Her eyes scanned his body and she felt heat grow inside her as she focused on his chiseled body. His brown eyes turned around at the door opening and he cracked a grin as he saw her.

"Good morning birthday girl, looking good today," he grinned.

Kinsley groaned and rolled here eyes, "Good morning Trev. I'm going to have a shower."

"Can I join," he waggled his eyebrows.

"No, you can't. Behave," she stuck her tongue out at him. Trevor laughed and turned around to continue cooking.

The water flowed down and she sighed in relief as the heat soothed her aching muscles. She closed her eyes and was transported back to the past.

The Past

Kinsley laid on the floor bruised and broken. Her nose finally stopped bleeding but she could tell it was broken. Wasn't the first time and wouldn't be the last. She cried out in pain as she rolled over to her back, grimacing as her ribs screamed in anguish. She heard the door slam as her father left for the bar. Her door opened softly as her mother limped through.
